Health is one of the main factors that determine the wellbeing and success of individuals, including the whole nation. Thus, like businesses, health organizations require sound management and leadership style for them to succeed in achieving their missions and goals. According to UCSF Health (2019), University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center is currently the leading health care organization in the state, and it is also ranked high nationally, especially concerning offering specialized medical services. Besides, UCSF Medical Center is internationally recognized because it is a highly specialized and innovative health care organization.
Mission and Goals of UCSF Medical Center
The organization has clear mission and goals that it is determined to achieve within the required time. The mission of UCSF Medical Center is to provide quality caring, healing, and teaching services with the aim of enhancing the health and wellbeing of people in California, USA, and the entire world ( UCSF Health, 2019) . Besides, the hospital is determined to use medical and biomedical research to advance health worldwide. The main goal of the UCSF Medical Center, on the other hand, is to be the best provider of health care services, including the best place to work and do medical research ( UCSF Health, 2019) . Other goals include training the next generation of leading health care professionals, work towards eliminating health disparities, integrate all groups of professionals, and develop collaborative approaches to the delivery of health care services. Health Management and Leadership
Management and leadership are some of the critical factors that determine the delivery of relevant and quality health care services. Even though management and leadership are different concepts, they are similar in many ways as they both influence the success of organizations. Good managers should always be determined to be good leaders while leaders should have relevant management skills to achieve the set mission and goals effectively. A leader is expected to have vision and mission of what is achievable and then communicate it to followers who in turn help in achieving the set goals and objectives ( Unnikrishnan, 2016) . Besides, leaders should be able to motivate followers within the organization and give the necessary support to attain goals. Managers, on the other hand, ensure that all the required resources are available for efficient and effective operations of an organization. Hence, the success of the health care organization relies a lot on the management and leadership.
The success of the UCSF Medical Center is mainly attributed to sound management and leadership ( Arroliga et al ., 2014) . The organization’s top leaders led by its CEO Mark Laret have constantly reorganized the governance structure of the medical center and encourage affiliation and partnership to enhance the success of UCSF Medical Center. At the same time, the leadership of the health organization has relied on medical research and a highly motivated workforce to achieve the set goals and objective. The leadership of the health organization indicates that a leader should have a good sense of mission and vision, be able to influence others, be decisive, motivate and support followers, and use creative problem-solving techniques.
Therefore, I also need some relevant competencies to effectively lead the UCSF Medical Center, which is a leading health organization in California. First, I need to be visionary to help the health care organization achieve its mission and goals. A visionary leader can see the potential and use the necessary resources and strategies to actualize the opportunity, leading to a competitive advantage in the market or sector ( Unnikrishnan, 2016) . However, to be a successful visionary leader who can effectively help UCSF Medical Center to achieve its mission and goals, I must be able to take risks, actively listening to what are other colleagues are saying, and take responsibility for my decisions, behaviors, and actions. The current health care environment is characterized by a lot of challenges and uncertainties, which may hinder UCSF Medical Center from meeting its mission of providing quality caring, healing, and teaching services. To address the challenges and uncertainties, I need to be creative, innovative and think outside the box, which is only important if I remain a visionary leader. Hence, I need to be a visionary leader to lead UCSF Medical Center effectively.
The second important competency that I need to lead UCSF Medical Center effectively is to be a mentor. One of the primary goals of the health care organization is to train the next generation of leaders who will be able to transform the health care industry ( Hawkins & Fontenot, 2010) . I believe that the goal can only be achieved when young employees and leaders in the organization are mentored and adequately prepared to assume the future leadership roles and responsibilities. Mentorship is vital in the current health care environment because it does not only help in training the next generation of leaders and professionals, but it also enhances innovation in organizations ( Moore & Wang, 2017) . Mentoring promotes innovation as it helps employees and young leaders to discover and learn new things that can enhance their creativity. As a result, I believe that in need mentorship competency to help the organization achieve its missions. The high quality of care, healing, and training service are only possible when the organization is creative and innovative.
The third competency is teamwork, which is essential in a health care environment that involves people from different medical fields and professions. Effective teamwork is recognized globally as one of the strategies that health organizations can use to improve the quality of medical services while improving the safety and wellbeing of patients ( Babiker et al ., 2014) . The competency is important because it will help UCSF Medical Center to achieve its goal of integrating all groups of professionals and providing a collaborative approach to health care services. I believe that the success of the organization in achieving its mission and goals rely a lot on teamwork. As a leader, I need to collaborate and work closely with colleagues and other employees to enhance the success of the organization.
The fourth competency is the ability to pave the way for success. Paving the way for success will enable the organization to achieve its goals and objectives, especially by setting new aspirations and instilling courage, resilience, and optimism in employees ( Arroliga et al ., 2014) . Employees in the organization also need to be promoted to work towards realizing goals and objectives. Paving the way for success also requires that I be smart and highly skilled in leading and being able to support and motivating others to work with me to achieve the organization's mission and goals. The four leadership competency can help me to lead UCSF Medical Center effectively.
Why the Competencies are Important
Visionary leadership is crucial because it helps in creating effective plans and strategies that can be used to address emerging challenges in the health care sector. Visionary leadership, therefore, will help me to see the bigger picture and be able to challenges facing UCSF Medical Center. Mentorship is also an important competency to the organization, employees and patients. Specifically, mentorship will help in preparing future leaders while at the same time improving innovation and creativity in the organization ( Moore & Wang, 2017) . It is through mentorship that junior employee and leaders can learn new things and be creative. Effective teamwork competency is important because it improves coordination and efficiency in the provision of health care services. At the same time, teamwork enhances communication and high job satisfaction among employees ( Babiker et al ., 2014) . Also, paving the way for success is essential in motivating employees to achieve the goals and objectives that are set by the organization.
Therefore, the information that I gleaned in this course will improve my leadership styles and strategies in health care management. Importantly, I have learned that sound leadership skills are required in the health care sector just like the business arena. I now understand that the management of health care organization needs a leader to be a team player, visionary, and be able to motivate others. Besides, information from the course has challenged me to learn about leadership in the healthcare sector.
Conclusion
Effective leadership is important in any organization, whether public or private. The success of a health care organization relies on leadership styles that are embraced by its leaders. UCSF Medical Center is one of the leading health care organizations in California because of sound leadership. Thus, I need leadership competencies such as visionary, mentorship, and teamwork to lead the health care organization successfully. The course has improved my leadership ability.
