Why are teams such an important part of health care?
In healthcare, teamwork is essential since quality service delivery requires efforts from all corners, including from patients themselves. Teamwork has various definitions in other fields, but in the health system, it refers to the partnership of two or more people who have decided to work together to achieve a common goal (HRH Global Resource Center, n.d). There are various reasons why teamwork or teams have been seen to be of great benefit in health care. First, teams are essential in that they aid in breaking the complex nature of the healthcare system. The complex and specialized nature and experience needed in healthcare make it a field of concern that requires teamwork to help in attempting complicated healthcare services and, at the same time, learn new methods (HRH Global Resource Center, n.d). In addition to complexity, teams are also crucial in supporting medical staff in maintaining and managing the rising aging population and chronic diseases that require extra care. Most importantly, teamwork has been seen to reduce the occurrence of medical errors.
How will you use this strategy in your degree program while working on teams?
First of all, it is crucial to understand that teams comprise of different people with different backgrounds. Therefore, effective communication skills are necessary to sustain and control the team. While working on a complicated medical case or doing research, teamwork is better since it creates an avenue for different opinions, as well as experiences, which help in cracking the case. Additionally, teamwork requires respect and equal chances to all members irrespective of age, sex, or race. Besides, the other important aspect while working on teams is to first of all conduct research and learn all the necessities that are important in teams. Such an approach is not only helpful in understanding one's team but also the patient's needs. Finally, learning all the fundamentals of teamwork helps in avoiding unnecessary arguments and misunderstandings.
