The paleo diet is believed to be the healthiest way of food consumption as it takes a genetic approach and reduces the risk of various degenerative diseases such as heart diseases. Obesity and diabetes. (PaleoLeap, 2018)

1. What are the main differences between these two approaches/positions?

According to the paleo diet, one should consume a variety of proteins from as many animal sources as possible. Healthy animal fats are the cornerstone of a paleo diet. However, the second approach shows that high consumption of protein increases the risk of cancer, diabetes, and death among middle-aged adults and has a less effect if the protein is from plant sources. 2. Are there any similarities between the two approaches/positions?

Both approaches advocate for protein consumption for a healthy life free of various degenerative diseases including cancer and diabetes. They agree that the problem is not protein intake but the amount of protein taken and its source where paleo pushes for animal sources and the second approach for plant sources.

3. How do you (an informed consumer) judge the credibility of the claims? How do you think an informed consumer can make a wise decision?

Both approaches are credible as they seem to support a similar practice, i.e., protein consumption. However, there should be consultations with nutritionists and dieticians on the amount of intake necessary and the frequency of use depending on the protein sources.

4. What implications do you think this has for the health and well-being of our society?

Different approaches with differing positions are prone to cause a lot of confusion and misconceptions about healthy diets and protein consumption. For instance, Paleo diet supports high protein consumption of protein from animal sources for all ages while the second approach advocates for reduced intake of proteins for middle-aged adults and high protein intake among people of old age.

5. Personal reflection. (What can and should be done? What has your experience been? etc.)

Nutritional programmes should be established to educate the mass on proper diets relevant to one’s age group. Body size and health conditions. Researchers should work together to give a clear and conclusive answer on what amount of protein is harmful and from which sources. I have seen people succumb to poor health due to lack of dietary knowledge. For instance. You find the elderly who believe that protein from animal sources is harmful having low protein consumption rates. However, Prof Longo states that growth hormones and the growth factor IGF-1 may be responsible for the need for high protein consumption by older people as the activity of these factors, declines naturally with aging((NHANES) III.
