Partnering to Heal is a clip simulation training program that focuses on infection control actions for health professional students, clinical and patient advocates. The training program address effective communication on infection control activities and the aim of providing a ‘culture for safety’ in healthcare organization to protect patients from getting sicker. Five main characters make decisions on preventing Health Care-Associated Infection (HAIS). Currently, I work for state processing applications for aid. My goal is to work for the state with the epidemiologists. The character chosen was an infection preventionist. The character is Janice Upshaw who is a new employee charged with using a team-based approach to decrease infection.

As an infection preventionist, the primary role was to perform surveillance for patients with associated healthcare infections, enforcing isolation procedures if necessary and also controlling outbreaks. Education on infection prevention and control was also provided to health professionals and patients (Pogorzelska-Maziarz & Manning, 2018). I also monitored infection control and prevention practices including hand hygiene, doing by standard and contact precautions and enforcing the major practice bundle which naturally complement an antimicrobial stewardship program. The surveillance method and technology were used to determine and control the multi-drug resistant organisms among patients and healthcare professionals and the rising incident rates over time (Pogorzelska-Maziarz & Manning, 2018). Engaging with nurses, physicians and the patients on the practices that can be done to prevent and control infection enable easier interaction on the importance and the need for antimicrobial stewardship and the necessity for appropriate use of antibiotics. The activities done involved conducting training programs where practices created to reduce urinary tract infections were addressed and other hygienic activities that were effective in controlling HealthCare Associated Infections. It was my responsibility to ensure that the important practices were performed by both the healthcare providers and the patients to ensure that the healthcare-associated infections were controlled and prevented. I did well in my role since I performed all the necessary and essential actions that ensured that the risk of healthcare-associated infection was monitored and prevented.

One of the choices made that led to unexpected outcomes was making a diagnosis without testing the patients. Since a diagnosis of a patient was based on patient’s history together with the observation of physical examination, most of the patients were diagnosed without performing a testing procedure to isolate the patients who were infected from those who were not infected. This practice led to an unexpected rise in infection since some of the patients had not expressed the infection signs and symptoms. Use of improper testing techniques and equipment was another choice that led to unexpected outcomes. This equipment led to analytical variations, hence, making the analyzed values to differ every time they are measured. I found that it was important to use modern technology since analytical variation would have been avoided hence the correct microbial values would be collected thus providing accurate data of how the rate of infection would have been reduced and controlled.

This assignment relates to my current work. I work for the state processing application to aid, and my goal is to work for the state with the epidemiologist. Epidemiologist practice in offices and laboratories at the state. They are also employed in the government by agencies including the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is related to the work of an infection preventionist. This is because they both focus on health situations and major in activities that may control and prevent adverse health outcomes. Just like an infection preventionist, the epidemiologist investigates diseases by collecting and analyzing health data using research, questionnaires, observations, and studies. During a disease outbreak, the epidemiologists work and determine the reasons for the spread of the contagious disease and then give ideas and procedures of containment and treatment. Lessons were learned from the character I played. All the lessons learned and knowledge gained from the play will be utilized in my workplace. The lessons involve ensuring all measure and techniques are performed to monitor and control the spread of diseases. Another lesson is to ensure that all measures are understood by all individuals in the workplace to prevent irresponsible actions that may lead to unexpected outcomes.

Prevention of infection involves many activities which aim to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infection (Pogorzelska-Maziarz & Manning, 2018). The primary prevention levels aim at preventing the risk of healthcare-associated infection. Training and educating the healthcare professionals and patients on the different actions that would prevent the risk of acquiring infection was done. Immunization procedures were performed especially to the healthcare professionals. Also, enforcement of hygienic practices in the healthcare organization was done. The secondary prevention level focuses on reducing the rate of infection that has already occurred. Diagnosis and testing were done to identify infected individuals. Isolation of the infected patients was done so that they could receive medication without infecting others. Finally, choices were also made at tertiary prevention levels. The tertiary prevention level focuses on easing the effect of the ongoing infection. The infected patients were given immediate medication to control their infections. Appropriate use of antibiotics was also done to reduce the rate of infections on the infected patients. Also, patients were advised to ensure they maintained their hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infection to healthy patients.

In conclusion, the WILL Interactive “partnering to heal" simulation is a valuable training program. It trains and provides knowledge of the actions to perform to monitor and control the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Performing the character of an infection preventionist educated me and gave me the knowledge of the practices to be done to prevent the chances of infection.
