Using the definitions from the course lectures, discuss how the idea of naturalism or modernism is depicted in your author’s work.
Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald book, ‘ Babylon Revisited, ’ the author has highlighted naturalism in the way the protagonist was trying to recapture his fall down into grace. From the story, Charles Wales was a very talented and handsome young man, who wasted his life being an alcoholic. In this case, the protagonist was struggling and battling to overcome his alcohol addiction to become a better man. On the other hand, Fitzgerald has show modernism in the way it was hard for Wales to adapt to the new environment.
Wales was faced with the challenge of avoiding his friends since he felt that they had taken full control of his life. He had hard time trying to convince his wife that he had changed. After his wife’s death, Wales returned to Paris after the stock market crash. During this period, he was alienated from the world of alcohol, his family, and friends. Wales quote, ‘‘I have spoiled this city for myself’’, displays how he felt that Paris was a gloom city which caused most of his sufferings. To start a new life, he decided to leave Paris with his daughter.
