Dorothy Smith uses “women standpoint” as the basis of her argument on women being invisible. Women live through devalued social statuses in patriarchal societies. Dorothy imagines the lives of women to be in the formation of a circle among men who only consider what other men say. Value in the modern society is attached to fields of paid employment and politics and those occupying the highest positions of power in military and intellectual sectors. Men use these positions of power to fulfill their own agendas at the expense of what women want. Women are isolated from the constitution of knowledge because their roles are perceived as natural. Women are expected to have a reduced intellectual capability and should only take up caregiver responsibilities and other basic roles.

The information age is dominated by globalization of culture through the media. Asante perceives the Eurocentric perspective as a rapidly spreading kind of university that is dominating other styles of thought. Media companies such as CNN and MTV have a wide array of shows broadcasted all around the world, flooding American values over every other culture. Social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram have similar dominative concepts aimed at taking control of other cultures. The expansive colonialization process is having immense impact on Afrocentric cultures and their way of thinking. Through modern information media, there is increased alignment with a single understanding of the social world.

Developing a truly postmodern social theory is an intellectual project due to the current legacy and characteristics of the 21 st Century. The first approach would be embrace uncertainty in a way that one cannot differentiate between what is real, and what is not. It involves taking personal freedom by evaluating things from a personal perspective based on good and bad rather than taking someone’s word for it. Postmodernism is more of rejecting all existing worldviews and deconstructing them to understand how the new theory is better than pre-existing ones. A person developing a postmodern theory must embrace ambiguity, serendipity, and relativity.
