Poetry as an art has been in existence for centuries and has also been practiced over multiple human civilizations. It is through poetry that the creeds, as well as systems of human values, are conversed and they also act as entertainment and enlightenment tools. Over the last century, there have been numerous renowned poets like Audre Lorde that have been celebrated for their masterpiece poem composition. This is an analysis of an untitled poem by Audre Lorde that provides a description of the overall impression of the film and an analysis of the important images and symbols used in its composition.

Overall Impression of the Poem

The poem reflects upon the challenges faced by women on their day to day lives. Additionally, that is in their struggle to compete with their male counterparts for equal opportunities in life such as careers, education and other gender equality concerns. The first three lines of the poem illustrate a call for unity among the women, through their realization that they face similar challenges in their lives.

Also, the first three lines explain that the women have decided to work collaboratively in fighting the oppressive attributes subjected towards them by the biases of the society marred by male chauvinist tendencies. Line four to six in the poem acts like a warning cautioning the women of their fate. That is if they fail to act and fight for their liberation from the grips of male domination.

The phenomenon has been described through the use of statements like “blood will congeal” and “dead planet”. That is to depict the state of hopelessness and defeat that will face the women if they fail to act. Ultimately, the last four lines inform the women of the fulfilled state they will have in the event they successfully manage to fight for their rights. The lines promise the women of countless triumph and a dawn into a better future.

Images and Symbols Used in the Composition of the Poem

There are several stylistic devices that have been used in the poem. Among them is the use of an oxymoron, which is a technique used in literary writing to combine contradictory traits. In the sixth line, the author of the poem talks about a dead planet, which is an instance of an oxymoron. The phrase “dead planet” is an oxymoron since, in the preceding lines, it is evident that the author is talking about a world that has women who strive to make their voice heard.

Metaphors have also been used in the poem. Additionally, metaphors are words or phrases that are used in a composition to mean one thing and symbolize a different thing. Examples of metaphors in the composition include the use of the statement women’s blood will congeal. In this case, the author of the poem did not literary mean that all the women’s blood will clot. Instead, it was a metaphor to mean that the women would lose hope and stop struggling to fight for their rights.

Imagery has also been used in the poem. Imagery is evidenced where the author of the poem employs words as well as phrases that enable an audience to form a mental image of the idea discussed in the poem. Example of an imagery in the poem is in the phrase “we seek beyond history”. The phrase implies to the audience that the women being discussed in the poem will not just settle on making a history for themselves. Instead, they hope to achieve even more in their life. The section can be stated as imagery since any achievement they will make despite how big or small in the fight for their liberation will still form a history.

Conclusion

In conclusion, poetry as an art has been in existence for centuries, and it has also been practiced over numerous human civilizations. Poems are important because they act as entertainment and enlightenment tools and also act as creeds and systems of discoursing human values. The featured untitled poem by Audre Lorde reflects upon the challenges faced by women on their day to day lives. That is in their struggles to compete with their male counterparts for equal opportunities in life such as careers, education and other gender equality concerns.
