My reflection is about an experience I encountered working as a nurse in the department of mothers and their newborns. My inspiration to put down this piece is to provide an insight into other upcoming couplet care nurses on the challenges they may come across and how to handle them. Mothers and their newborns require extra care because of their delicate condition (Lauwers & Swisher, 2017). They can as well look for strategies of preventing the cases from happening. The reflection paper will also allow me to assess whether the experience affected me negatively.
I was in my regular check-up for a mother who had just given birth a few hours ago. I got surprised when I found the woman bleeding heavily. The Child was lying by her side innocently while the mother was undergoing through the pain. I gave the mother some drugs to minimize the bleeding and took her back to the midwives room for them to check what they had not done as required, and they rectified. The following day the newborn baby was crying very hard. The mother was also at the verge of crying bearing that the baby was her first child. She had no prior knowledge on how to deal with a crying newborn. The baby was crying due to hunger, and I advised the mother to breastfeed. The newborn stopped crying, and I could see the joy on the mother all over her face.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Dealing with the bleeding mother was quite traumatizing as I did not know the exact cause or where the midwives did it wrong. My understanding of the scenario of caring for the mother and the newborn is always being ready for any possible challenge. I also learnt that maintaining the right relationship with coworkers is paramount to life-saving as the midwives responded immediately to the mother who was under my care. The midwives should also be very careful when assisting the mothers to give birth to avoid complications later, which may traumatize both the mothers and the nurses, like was my case. Nurses should as well embrace the innocence of new mothers and advise them accordingly (Brockman, 2016).
