Racial and ethnic discrimination has predominantly undermined peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic groups living in the US. YG song “Meet the Flockers” encourages violence and crimes directed to a specific ethnic group in the US. The song promotes discrimination of the Chinese citizens in the US by indicating that Chinese people do not keep their money in the bank hence one can break into their houses and get the money. This song is a perfect representation of the existence of ethnic discrimination and violence hence relevant to the course. The song and the accompanying video have sparked outrage not only in the US but also in China. The song’s lyrics are offensive to the Chinese community as the song encourages violence specific to their community therefore exposing them to the danger of being robbed or even killed. The outrage against the song ensued after a gang of three gun men invaded a Chinese-American woman in Atlanta. This led to the song being made viral especially among the Chinese communities both in the US and China. The fact that the song points out that Chinese people keep their money in the house is enough reason to encourage local criminal gangs to invade Chinese homes. Moreover, the song epitomizes hatred against the Chinese people in the US.

However, the song is not entirely to blame for the existing crimes and injustices targeted to specific ethnic groups but it is a reflection of what is happening. The deep seated ethnic conflicts around the world are not just caused by songs but there are inherent factors that promote the vice. The culture of the Chinese of not believing in banks may be partly to blame because they predispose themselves to the dangers of staying with cash. Therefore, the songs are a reflection of what the society actually is. Most Chinese-Americans have blamed the song for the apparent existing atrocities targeted at their community without probing the trends in crime in the US. The song may be one of the factors that contribute to ethnic and race discrimination but there is need to investigate the root cause of the problem.

The song may reflect the ethnic tension between African Americans and Asian Americans because most the cases involving violence against Asians both in cities and colleges around the world involve Blacks. This reflects a serious societal issue in western countries regarding the targeting of Chinese for crime. For instance, Asian students have been reportedly been systematically targeted for bullying with some of them being admitted to hospital in South Philadelphia High School. Moreover, there have been also cases of Asians being physically assaulted in the US. The cases reflect an existing tension between African Americans and Asians.

Moreover, there have been cases of violence against Asians especially in New Zealand, France, and Australia where the Asians have protested against the apparent mistreatment of their community. One of the recent advertisements in a Chinese airline magazine featuring an untidy black man being transformed into a tidy Asian may reflect a problem from the Chinese themselves rather than the world. The advert further warns Asian travellers from visiting multi-racial areas of London. This in itself demonstrates a deep seated culture of racism in the Chinese people especially towards blacks. The Chinese should not be blind to what is happening around the world in order to learn valuable lessons regarding race and ethnicity.

The society should not turn away from its responsibility to identify the root causes of social problems by directing blames to superficial subjects. It is wrong to point out that a mere song can explain the existence of ethnic tensions around the world. The songs express what is actually happening rather than sparking events as alleged by the Asian communities. Their attitude towards the rest of the world should change especially in terms of racism and ethnicity.
