The First Step in the Student's Guide to Research

Before an individual can conduct a study, they need to have a plan in place so that the process can go on without any problem. Having a research question helps guide the research process. Therefore, the research question is the single most essential component in a study. However, other things are important when it comes to research, and it is bias. In other words, the research question and the evaluation of bias are some of the most important in every research.

The initial step in student’s guide to research is research question framing. It is necessary to make sure that the research question framed can be answered. Sometimes, students frame a research question and later realize that it is hard to answer and their research comes to a stop. However, the learner needs to make sure that the question has never been asked previously. Furthermore, it must contribute to the education knowledge on a topic. The objective of having a research question is to give the research a particular direction. In other words, the research question is ascertaining an emphasis. Mostly, this lays the foundation for the whole project making sure that the topic and all the supporting information are adequately dealt with. This ensures a smooth flow of the study. Eventually, the final product is more complete as a result.

As a matter of fact, a research question is the first thing that needs to be formulated so that the right materials can then be gathered. In the absence of the research question, it would prove challenging to know the next step after gathering the materials.

Main Assumptions and Bias of the Drug Industry

The drug industry is lucrative – worth billions of dollars. Therefore a common assumption is that they conduct a proper study. After all, they have the resources to ensure this. It is assumed that the industry will do all the tests ensuring the drugs are safe enough for everyone – the general population. In actual sense, it is believed the final product is safe. Furthermore, the completed research makes an assumption on the possible side effects and how they will affect different individuals. These generalizations are not always right as people are different. Another source of bias in the drug industry is that may impact the research process include the belief that men are stronger than females and therefore need a more robust body system.

Personal bias as a Consumer have on the Drug Industry’s Influence over Research

As an individual, my personal bias regarding the drug industry’s influence on drug research includes the fact that they manufacture drugs in full knowledge of the side effects. It is my belief that the industry is involved in significant cover-ups regarding the side effects. Furthermore, the industry may not conduct sufficient research on these side effects. The primary goal may be financial in nature. Herbal remedies are always an option and may sometimes be better than the synthetic drugs. The industry may, therefore, conceal this fact with the intention of profiting from it. In that context, my bias regarding the industry is based on this simple fact of possibly covering the truth, whether it be in terms of side effects or the potency of alternative medicine.
