Emergency managers are charged with critical responsibilities, such as planning and carrying out disaster response programs. Emergency managers also provide emergency training to the community members for them to know what to do in the instance that a disaster arises. Emergency managers, therefore, must be able to work closely with the community in order to carry out their mandate effectively. For this reason, the emergency manager requires to have qualities such as communication and cooperation skills, critical thinking and decision making qualities, and time management, mobilization, and delegation skills. Communication is critical as the emergency manager has to go down to the people and involve them in important operations. The manager must be able to put the people together and have everyone focused on the same agenda. The manager needs to be able to make critical decisions that would determine the survival of the community. Working with a large group of people would require time management, mobilization, and delegation skills. Hence, the emergency manager must have experience in working with people and able to charm and focus everyone on the agenda at hand. Additionally, the emergency manager must have the ability to adapt to changing conditions and be able to work under pressure. Disasters can quickly change the normal nature of the environment and bring about very uncomfortable conditions. The emergency manager must be aware of this fact and be ready and able to adapt quickly to such conditions and work under pressure.
