Rutgers school of nursing is one of the eight RBHS institutions. It emerged after the merging of the former Rutgers College of nursing and Legacy school of nursing, which was a part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey (UMDNJ) (Willard, 2016). The integration took place in 2013 following the mandate of the New Jersey State legislature to dissolve the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, an act that led to the merging of most of its schools with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (Adkins, 2014). This integration created an independent division, the Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences (RBHS), within Rutgers University.
The Rutgers school of nursing is the largest nursing program in New Jersey with more than 200 affiliated clinical providers and additional locations in New Jersey, New Brunswick and its headquarters in Rutgers University-Newark. The school has more than 100 faculty members and 1800 students. It offers degrees such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in nursing, doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P), and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in nursing as well as a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in urban systems. The mission of Rutgers school of nursing is to provide health care education through research as well as clinical service (Rutgers University-New Brunswick, 2019).

The unified school of nursing embarked on a journey that has since led to the establishment of an innovative practice standard.
