What CAM Therapy did you chose? I chose the acupuncture CAM. What disorder can it be used on? This CAM can be used to treat depression, dementia, and schizophrenia (Oppel, 2015). Does the person performing the CAM need a special licensing or certification? The person administering the CAM needs to have experience in applying the CAM, although he/she does not need to have licensee or certification. |
Does this treatment require a physician order, or is it an independent nursing intervention? This CAM therapy does not require an order from a physician. It is purely an independent intervention. A physician may not be needed since the therapy uses totally unconventional healing techniques. Further, this CAM therapy is not in any way related to what modern science teaches about the human body (Oppel, 2015). |
Describe how this CAM treatment is carried out. What steps does the practitioner follow, and how is the client prepared? First, fine needles are inserted into particular body parts that are believed to be the path of the body’s vital energy. The underlying implication of inserting the needles is to correct energy balance in the body (Smith et al., 2018). There are several ways of carrying out the acupuncture process, including classical or traditional acupuncture, auricle acupuncture, trigger-point acupuncture, and single-point acupuncture (Smith et al., 2018). This CAM requires a hands-on connection with the patient. The expert carrying out the treatment has to continually keep the patient in view and touch the patient regularly (Holland, 2018). What equipment is needed, if any? There are three primary equipment needed to carry out this therapy. The first one, and the most common, is metallic needles. The second one is a low-level laser beam for carrying out a type of acupuncture known as laser acupuncture. |
What information needs to be provided to the client prior to the therapy session? How are confidentiality and privacy maintained? Before the application of the therapy, the patient should be touched by the expert (Holland, 2018). |
What research has been done regarding this therapy? Is there evidence for its success? Few studies have been carried out regarding this therapy. Most of the studies that have been done have, however, returned unclear evidence on how this CAM is effective in treating some mental illnesses. Some of the studies have yielded contradictory results (Holland, 2018). |
