Addiction has been highly linked to the loss of control by an individual. On the other hand, increased loss of control intensifies the level of addiction. Psychologists have been arguing about whether addiction causes loss of control. It has been noticed that most addicted individuals lose control of their lives and this could lead to permanent or irreversible damage. At this point, an individual may require serious medical or divine intervention. There are certain reasons which make addicted individuals track their control mechanisms.

To start with, lack of moderation is one of the major causes that make addicted individuals to lose control. These individuals fail to limit the activities which have a serious impact on their lives. These activities include surfing the internet, playing online games, drinking, and smoking, among many others. Failure to limit such activities develops into an obsessive habit that they do not have control over (Griffiths, 2013). Hence, lack of moderation leads to lack of control.

The lack of awareness concerning habit formation has also influenced lack of control. Habit formation is a very crucial concept that defines how individuals become addicted and how their subconscious brain develops automatic responses to certain behaviours. Addicted individuals do not understand how repetitive indulgence in activities such as drinking and smoking create an automatic habit loop. In this loop, there is a cue, routine and reward. Individuals usually develop a craving for the reward, and when the cue is presented, their brain automatically responds (Griffiths, 2013). These individuals do not have control over this process. Therefore, it is important to have this awareness. Failing to have a conscious perspective of the impact of certain activities may lead to obsessive indulgence. Most individuals are ignorant or lack the understanding of the effects of their activities. This makes them continue to indulge in these activities without moderation leading to lack of control.

Summing up, lack of control among addicted individuals is very common because of lack of awareness of important things such as habit formation and moderation. This has influenced their control on certain activities thus intensifying their levels of addiction. Control can be gained through increased awareness.
