Competitive sports have become important to the millions of spectators and participants who are interested in them. Since sports influence society, sportsmen's legal and moral conduct are often under scrutiny. Some controversies surrounding football that might relate to NCAA ethical rules violations include the case of Mike Bowlin's fight, Le Garrette Blount punching Byron Hout in a game, and Josh Kaddu being indicted for breaking into an SUV while drunk (Harrison-Dyer, 2011). All these are violations of the rules set by the intercollegiate conferences. This ethical issue of players behaving unethically relates to the course content by showing how media and sports interact. The unethical behaviors of players are explained as having caused huge ripples in the sea of athletics (Harrison-Dyer, 2011). Administrators and coaches violated set laws to attain a competitive advantage.

In the sporting world, law and ethics influence each other. Competitive sports have seen a rise in the influence in society leading the intercollegiate conferences to come up with codes of ethics and rules (Harrison-Dyer, 2011). The ethical conduct of those in leadership is specifically monitored due to the influence leaders have on fans and their team members. Five players who had been suspended from the Ohio State Football Program were allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl (Ferrell, & Fraedrich, 2015). This was despite their NCAA violations, which the coach was aware of.

The team won the Sugar Bowl that year, which might explain the University's and coach's motivation to disregard their unethical behavior (Ferrell & Fraedrich, 2015). Although they won, the coach, the players, the institution, and the team had to face the consequences of their actions. The coach was suspended and fined $250,000, then he subsequently retired (Harrison-Dyer, 2011). The players were also mandated to pay for the memorabilia they sold and the discounted services that they got while the team received a one-year bowl ban (ESPN, 2011). The institution was also forced to take more limitations on scholarships.

Communication efforts were instrumental in the outcome of the ethical issue. Media had played its role in informing society of what was going on with the case. Moreover, the coach had been informed of the violations of his team members via email but failed to take immediate action (ESPN, 2011). Since emails are a form of communication, the coach was found liable for infringing on the NCAA laws. This explains why he was suspended and fined while the team and the institution were punished as well.
