A detective nurse is one who uses their “clinical imagination” in addition to other abilities acquired in the nursing science so as to unearth any fine deviations or changes from what would be normally expected and use this information to control or prevent unwanted outcomes (Conceptual Model, 2013). A nurse does this by using their knowledge and experience to discover very small changes and design a way to prevent more harm from happening or control it by giving a patient the proper treatment so as to fast tract the healing process.
One of the conceptual model elements that I can apply to my role as a detective nurse is the use of technology/informatics. Technology involves the “devices and software used for patient care” that changes with every new innovation while informatics is the process of “engineering, storing, organizing, and manipulation of data” in order to provide patients with quality care that is safe and overall effective (Conceptual Model, 2013). Since these two keep changing with new innovations and developments, as a nurse, I need to be on top of the game to know what new technological advancement has taken place in the medical world. This means that I have to do my detective work to know what is new and what has been advanced in terms of technology. By using technology and informatics in my line of work, I will be able to detect any early symptom or problem from a patient and control it before it gets worse or prevent it from blowing up. Additionally, using modern advanced technology on patient is a very effective way to detect what would otherwise not be detectable from just observing or looking at a patient since it analyzes patient data and gives an effective diagnosis.

The second conceptual element that can be applied to the nursing detective role is compassionate patient-centered care. This involves the provision of “holistic care” in terms of the needs, values, and preferences of each patient individually in their well-being journey throughout their life (Conceptual Model, 2013). As a qualified nurse with the correct knowledge I have to establish the best care plan for my patient after analyzing their individual situation. Every patient has a different problem coupled with different circumstances and environment meaning that the type of care that I can recommend for one patient will not necessarily work for the other. I have to use my detective skill to determine what works for who and what does not work for them. In my current work for example, I work with patients who have gone through surgeries and each has a different healing timespan and as such, I have to work closely with surgeons, anesthetists to learn about the patient so that I can offer the patients appropriate care after surgery to ensure they heal well.
Nurse as a Scientist
As a nurse, I play the role of a scientist by using “translational science to influence healthcare decisions to prescribe and implement best practice” (Conceptual Model, 2013). Ideally, nurses usually work very closely with patients which means that they see firsthand what the patient is going through. This places the nurses at a unique position to give answers and recommendations to certain questions that other medical practitioners are not in a position to because they do not interact with the patient as much as nurses do.
One of the conceptual model elements I would use to show my role as a scientist is the evidence-based practice. Evidence based practice involves the integration of the current available evidence with that of “clinical expertise and patient preferences and value for delivery of optimal healthcare.” (Conceptual Model, 2013). Being around the patient or family most of the time means that as a nurse, I get to witnesses the patient’s behavior and the best practice and methods employed in taking care of those patients. I am therefore able to combine this evidence and expert practice to recommend the best methods of treating a patient based on this combination.
The second conceptual model element of how I will apply the role of a nurse as a scientist is informatics and technology. Informatics is the “engineering, storing, organizing, and manipulation of data” so as to provide quality care that is effective and safe to patients (Conceptual Model, 2013). Technology involves the use of devices and software that keeps changing in today’s world in patient care. At my work place, I use technological devices every day to do evidence based research that inform me of any new developments in the medical world in terms of patient care that can help me device the appropriate treatment methods for the patients I care for. I also use informatics in this process to engineer and manipulate data for various outcomes so that I can know which is more effective for a specific patient.
Nurse as Manager of the Healing Environment
Generally, the healing environment of a patient is influenced by global issues such as cultural, economic, political, and social factors. As a nurse, therefore, I have to play the role of the healing environment manager by advocating for better public policy that promote “social justice in the human health experience.” (Conceptual Model, 2013). This means that as a nurse I have to advocate for better government policies when it comes to patients environment and the various factors that influence the healing of a patient which include the social, economic, political, and cultural factors in the area where the patient is.
One of the conceptual elements that I will use is the professional/legal/ ethical elements to play my role as a manager of the healing environment. This involves having effective ways of making decisions within the frameworks of advocacy, practice standards, law, and social justice (Conceptual Model, 2013). As a nurse, I do acknowledge that an environment can contribute to the patient’s positive attitude or negative feeling. It is therefore my responsibility to find out how a different environment can reduce the negative attitudes, stress, and anxiety of a patient to make their healing quicker. I can use by role as a manager of the healing environment to advocate for better services at hospitals for patients, reasonable charges for healthcare services, and better care for staff at hospitals because when all these are taken care of, a better healing environment of a patient is created.
The last element is communication. Communication involves the “interaction with patients, families, communities, professional colleagues and other health care team members.” (Conceptual Model, 2013). For me to effectively play the role of a nurse as manager of the healing environment, I am usually in constant communication with my patients, their families, healthcare teams and my professional colleagues so that I can know how best to improve certain environments for the patients. As a perioperative nurse, I interact a lot with surgeons and patients during their healing process so I am able to understand what is good for them and what factors are unfavorable for them so that I can be able to pass the massage on to other industry professionals so that we make the environment better for the patients. For example, if people visiting are too loud in the hallway making the patient restless, I can pass this information to ensure that the hallways are always quite so as not to give patients discomfort and anxiety.
