General strain theory according to Robert Agnew argues that strain is based on failure to achieve a goal, for instance, failure to attain good grades, the existence of harmful impulses like the end of a relationship or loss of a parent, and removal of positive impulses like school associated problems. Stress often leads to negative emotions like depression or anger which in the long run lead to unacceptable behavior without adequate coping skills. Therefore according to this theory, it identifies that strain cuts across all populations and is not a phenomenon that is class specific.

He also explains that stain leads to criminal acts with an assumption that negative emotional states are conducive for various delinquent behavior. Some people react to psychological stress with complaints whereas others reside to criminal behavior. Negative factors like criminal environment and criminal character traits have proved to negatively influence people dealing with stress. Social inequalities in the society results to high pressure on disadvantaged groups hence an increase in the likelihood of criminal behavior.

Agnew's general strain theory, therefore, is an advancement on the traditional strain theories in the concept that it focuses on a broader range of strains as well as factors that influence the likelihood of criminal coping. on the other hand, traditional theories like the classic strain theory which only draws it's focus on single strains; the inability to achieve success goals.
