Prohibition of alcohol is a term that is used to denote the making illegal of the production, sale, distribution, purchase, and consumption of alcohol in a given region. It is a very controversial in many parts of the world even as it has it advantages and disadvantages. The positive aspect of prohibition is that it limits and even prevents the addiction to alcohol. Persons who have a problem with consuming too much alcohol will be saved from wrecking their lives as a result of unmanned alcohol usage ( Cook, 2007) . Large amounts of alcohol are bad for the health of any individual. It has adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, and prolonged use has had fatal effects.
There have been direct relations between alcohol consumption and increases in crime. Persons who are intoxicated are prone to assault and disorderly conduct. Other positive effects that come from prohibition are that accidents as a result of drunken driving will be reduced and it will improve on the finances of individuals since it is an expensive habit to uphold ( Cook, 2007) . Those against it state that it comes against a person’s freedom of choice. A person should have the freedom to choose whether or not to drink and having a law that forces a no alcohol consumption, sale or distribution law will have infringed on the freedom of choice. The addiction to alcohol has been referred to as a victimless crime.

However, prohibition is not always the way to go. When this law was passed in earlier years, citizens still found a way of sneaking to various locations and indulge in their favorite pass time. It is clear that total prohibition does more harm than good. Instead, law enforcement agencies and other concerned parties should look into other ways of controlling the sale and consumption of alcohol ( Klingemann & Gme l, 2001). According to Klingemann & Gme l, a few suggestions that seem to work are placing a time constraints on when the sale of alcohol should be allowed. Shops and other stores that are licensed to sell alcoholic beverages are given an opening and closing time that will limit its access. Age is also a factor to consider. Law agencies together with distributors of alcoholic beverages should ensure that the drinking age is enforced (2001).
