Writing a qualitative research paper involves coming up with a topic, which according to the researcher, answers a given problem (research problem), questions on the problem and the general design or develops a new body of knowledge.
The article by McNulty (2015) “Till Stress Do Us Part: The Causes and Consequences of Expatriate Divorce” delves into issues affecting expatriate families. The research study clear begins by giving a brief introduction on the problem at hand by defining its purpose which is to analyze grounds for and effects of expatriate divorce since there is a high number of cases of family challenges and job loss. The purpose of the study is well stated. Although the study analyses existing literature on related topics in studies conducted within the last 30 years, it does not explicate on the shortcomings of the studies. These shortcomings could have been a premise for strengthening the research purpose.

The research question that is evaluated by the study is “what are the causes of expatriate divorce?” The study also aims to answer the question “what are the risk factors for expatriate divorce?” Both questions are well stated and form the framework on which the researchers build their research thesis, discussion, and conclusion. By understanding risk factors and stressful nature of expatriate marriage, causes and effects of expatriate marriage, it is easy to derive the conclusions on why there is an increase in the case of expatriate divorces.
The research takes an exploratory study design in which the researcher adopts the inductive approach by interviewing a relatively average sample of 38 participants who are all expatriate divorcees. 25 participants are interviewed online while face-to-face interviews are conducted for the other 13 participants. This according to Tetnowski (2015), provides a relatively good ground for divergent responses. Adopting a case study approach for this paper is justifiable as it creates room for more research to be done on this dynamic topic. Sampling procedure used is somehow questionable as it may have given room for individuals who may not be real divorcees thus compromising results.
