My Thoughts on Workplace Culture of Amazon
From the video, I do not think that the workplace culture for Amazon may be “harsh” or “bruising,” a work culture that does not care about their employees’ personal life as some former employees described it in “The New York Times” article. This is because such a work culture may not fuel a company’s growth as Amazon has done in the recent years since employees may not be motivated to work and deliver the goals set for them in such an environment. To me, I think the so-called “harsh” work culture is a just a unique organizational culture of Amazon, and this work culture that is highly competitive is required for the cut-throat technology and retail markets like Amazon. In this context, this “love-it-or-leave-it” culture fosters an environment that is performance-driven, where employees are expected to deliver on the standards that may appear to be unreasonably high and achieve innovations that may be thought to be impossible. Thus, the employees who are unable to deliver may have negative thoughts regarding the culture because the management does not condone such under-performance. As such, I think this culture works best for Amazon and I believe it is the reason why the company is where it is today: to become the biggest online retailer worldwide.
How Amazon’s Workplace Culture Contribute to their Overall Success
The workplace culture of Amazon helps to achieve its overall success in various ways. First, the culture fosters their workers to work in an environment that is fast-paced and to compete against each other to deliver the goals that the team managers set for them since their performance rating is based on what they deliver. As such, the competitive work culture in Amazon drives their employees to work hard to meet the standards and goals set for them to deliver the ever-increasing customer service levels, which is one of their commitments that has spurred their growth and success. With this in mind, every worker singularly focuses on one thing: excelling on customers’ behalf. In this case, no one needs to spend extra time and energy to figure out how to behave or what to do to achieve what Amazon wants its brand to stand for internationally. Second, the culture also enables the team managers to push their employees to excel by employing around-the-clock and heavy scrutiny work, thereby bringing the best out of the workers who enjoy working in such an intense environment. As such, the employees are able to meet the goals of the company on a daily basis because the culture rewards long hours, innovations, and purposeful conflicts.

Workplace Culture of Amazon in the Future
In the future, I foresee this culture taking Amazon to greater heights. This is because the high-tech industry is a very competitive one. To outperform competitors, companies need to be unique in their ways, and that includes having a distinctive culture that is not fuzzy and warm as people has always thought of to become effective. As such, in the future, the culture of Amazon will enable it to continue expanding relentlessly into business areas that are new, innovate constantly, and grow quickly to outperform their competitors. Therefore, in overall, I foresee this unique culture as Amazon’s competitive advantage in the future, and because of its uniqueness, no other company in the same industry will be able to copy to compete with them.
