In Silva’s “Coming up Short”, Jaden comes from a poor background and also struggles in his education. The factors predispose him to economic struggles, unemployment and lack of education despite serving as a Marine Corp for five years. When considering the works of Ross Douthat and David Brooks, Jaden’s life as a young adult would have been different in the various ways. One is that he would have had an education from a good university. He might have been good in his studies and therefore made it to a good university in or out of his state. This might have provided the best opportunity to acquire a good education thus preparing him for employment. As he is, he has not acquired a college degree which makes it hard for him to get any white collar job. A university degree would have made him ripe for the employment world and made it possible for him to get a well-paying job.
Another way his life would have been different as a young adult is that he would be probably residing in one of the cities recognized for the successful such as Washington, Boston or San Francisco. He would probably be married to a woman of similar economic class and educational caliber. His education would have made it possible for him to get a well-paying job and therefore afford a good house and a car. He would have then opted to marry a woman who would afford the same lifestyle and would probably have one or two children by now. He is however still struggling to get a partner and he still lives in his aunt and uncle’s basement. He is also deep in debt and cannot manage to get any well-paying employment due to lack of a college degree.

Part 2
Wright and Rodgers identify negative externalities consequences of any activity or decision that affect others in a negative manner. In the case that an organization decides to close a factory in any given location, numerous negative externalities would occur. One is that locals will be unemployed. There is a high probability that many of the locals were employees in this factory. Closure will mean that the positions that were held by these individuals will leave with the factory. Loss of these many jobs will means that the local economy will be adversely affected. Some of the effects include homelessness especially for those who depended on these jobs for rent or mortgages; for some, it will mean a lower living standard and for others, the loss of a spouse’s income will increase their economic burden. Another negative externality would be the gradual end of development projects. It is especially true for a location that solely depended on the factory for different developmental advancements. It is likely that infrastructure such as roads, real estate development, the rise and development of businesses and issues like safety improved with the presence of the factory. When it closed down, employees who may have rented spaces in the area will move, businesses that were reliant on the factory such as restaurants will lose a significant amount of customers and may eventually close down. Such a factory ensures that the location is always active and the economy is always busy thus encouraging more development projects by locals or foreigners. When it closes, such development projects also die with it meaning that those who were depending on them on various ways are also affected immensely.
