Despite observers urging that defense spending needs to increase in order to match the uncertainties and emergent threats of the 21st century, I am for the idea that, the United States should spend less on the defense forces. The budget spent on military is far bigger than the threats that US security requires (Chief, 2015). Besides, the nations that pose threats to America are always weak and very few. According to the “America's Military Spending and the Uncertain Costs of its Wars: The Need for Transparent Reporting” ( 2020), there are reports that have observed that worst defense spending and war costs cases, are the causes of America’s contemporary economic status; national debt and deficits, crippled economy and new highs in federal spending.” America should however direct much of its spending on health and social security needs of the people because the wars are endless. Therefore, the costs spend on defense should also be cut and redirected to the massive debts and deficits of America. However, strengthening the military would mean strengthening of the nation (Editor, 2019).
Less US defense spending will enable reduce the debts and deficits that are piling up in the US. According to Editor (2019), Redirecting funds to other sectors will enable build a stable economy which would mean unemployment cases in the nation will be dealt with and also state bankruptcy handled. Additionally, spending on other sectors of the nation will enable effective health care, education and security for everyone. There are however, disadvantages of spending less on the military. This poses danger to the country because of lack of efficient weapons. The nation can be attacked or lose wars. America will therefore be vulnerable to wars due to poor security. Additionally, spending less on military would mean lack of enough man power and retention of army officers in the military. Funding the military means employing more people which could beat unemployment rates especially those from 16 years and above in the nation.
