Introduction
Walmart is currently the world’s largest company operating more than 11,500 stores under different banners in 27 countries. Being a global brand, the activities of the company are always under constant scrutiny and evaluation. The image of the company is, therefore, an ever-increasing concern for the executives and the stockholders. For this reason, the company’s business activities are guided by an elaborate code of ethics. Walmart’s code of ethics requires the company to abide by all laws in the jurisdictions it operates, report information about the company honestly and accurately, and to always act in a manner that exhibits integrity ("Global Ethics & Compliance", n.d.). Also, Walmart has three basic principles: respect for the individual, service to the customer, and striving for excellence. The code of ethics is an important tool for any organization. Still, the demands of today’s business world require an organization to go the extra mile to a positive build reputation, build strong community relationships, and market itself in the competitive global market place. To achieve this, Walmart has, over the years, undertaken extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This study analysis Walmart’s CSR, code of ethics, and outlines a concise argument for CSR.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Walmart has, over the years, endeavored to create opportunities for the community. The company has run numerous CSR programs targeting various community sectors. In May 2019, the company announced the hiring of 6000 military spouses through the military spouse career connection. This was in celebration of the National Military Month. Additionally, the company offered $1 million grant for the hiring of heroes. Sustainability enhancement programs have been centered on finding a more sustainable approach to retails ("Global Responsibility", n.d.). The company has set itself a target of achieving zero waste from its operations, sell products that sustain people and the environment, and a long term goal to operate on 100% renewable energy. On the community strengthening front, Walmart has partnered with different individuals and corporate to better the communities through programs such as the Walmart Foundation, partnered with Lebron James in a project whose goal is to improve education and fight hunger in the local communities. Other CSR projects aimed at community strengthening include a commitment to the fight against opioids, funding for Feed America program, funds contribution towards disaster management, and recoveries such as the $2.5 million contributions to assist Hurricane Michael Relief and Recovery in South Carolina.

Global Ethics Compliance
Decision making is guided by values. This includes treating people with respect, prioritizing the customer, acting with integrity, and striving for excellence. Walmart strives to always comply with all the applicable laws in the 27 countries within which they operate. Equally, the company holds itself accountable through its Global Ethics and Compliance Program that seeks to enhance transparency and accountability while empowering its associates to act in the right way. The key pillars of the program are sourcing responsibility, prioritizing safety, and reducing corruption risk.
Duty to all Stakeholders
Beyond the company’s shareholders, the company has a responsibility to all the other stakeholders whom the business activities affect directly or indirectly. Investors are the priority group for every business, but the interests of other stakeholder groups such as employees, customers, suppliers, and the community within which the business operates must be addressed because they have an impact on the business’ success, which in turn affects the stockholder's wealth. An assessment of Walmart’s operations shows a high consideration of customer interests as the business’s second priority. External stakeholders are critical to the success of every business.
Argument for CSR
While the company’s bottom line benefitted from its CSR programs, the greater benefit has been to the external stakeholders. CSR is equally a business strategy aimed at marketing, building a positive brand reputation, enhancing customer loyalty, among other benefits. However, providing opportunities, enhancing sustainability, and strengthening communities are noble course whose impact is long-lasting and affects a wide range of people far and beyond.
