Jainism is an ancient region that was practiced by the Indians who believed in the Sramana traditional way of life. It is a peaceful religion whose main tenet Ahimsa strongly upheld non-violence virtues and respect to all living creation. Among the three tenets of Jainism, Ahimsa was the cornerstone which formed the religion's fundamental doctrine. This tenet mainly aimed at protecting God’s living creation. According to Ahimsa, the injury was associated with either harm inflicted by one’s self on their body and also that which was inflicted to one by other people. This tenet was applied by Gandhi politically in the liberation of the Indians from the British ruled India. He applied the attributes of non-violence in liberating the Indians from the oppression they were forced to undergo under the colonist rule. On the other hand, ahimsa can be applied in the recent world by individuals through protecting their bodies and not indulging in activities that are likely to harm them. This can be done through living a healthy kind of lifestyle and not indulging in drugs and other activities that are likely to harm our body.

Sikhism is also an ancient religion of the Indian sub-continent which dates back to the 15th century. Like Hinduism, Sikhism is also a minority religion that consists of believers mainly from the Indian sub-continent. Both religions believe in one creator who created the world and everything in it. They both believe in faith and meditation on the name of the Holy creator who deserves reverence. As a minority religion, the main limitation faced by the believers is often the risk of discrimination by other developed religions. One feels left out from the rest of the world when their religion and thus views are not recognized. The feeling has an effect of lowering one’s self-esteem and in turn not in a position to relate equally with the other members of the society. Despite the discriminatory factors affecting both the Sikhism and Hinduism believers, their strong belief in the creator emphasized in both religions protects the believers from what they refer to as the “five thieves.” Throughout their lives, therefore, the creator protects them from lust, conceit, rage, attachment and greed which form the five thieves.

In conclusion, these ancient religions that existed in the 15th century lived a healthy type of lifestyle. They were holy believers who believed in meditation and rebuked the secular form of living. In addition to living healthily, they also coexisted in peace and harmony with one another as scripted by their greatest tenet of non-violence upon God’s living creation.
