In a functionalist perspective, the society is supposed to be a stable entity that requires the maintenance of given social phenomenon at equilibrium for a stable society. Animal rights is one of these phenomenon that need to be stabilized. If a smooth functioning is to be attained, then the equilibrium has to be maintained through positive responses to problematic social phenomenon such as animal rights. Nonhuman animal rights is one of the proponents who seek see nonhuman animals given the rights as persons instead of property in order for them to achieve bodily liberty and integrity in the society.

Proponents of conflict theory have a view of the society as a combination of various multiple groups who are in competition for resources that are deemed scarce in the society. This competition has seen the diminishing of the ethics of non-human animal and therefore the cause for alarm. They express animals to be valuable not only in their value but also in themselves. Conflict theorists feel there is need to be concerned on the legislations concerning animal cruelty due to the existing nature of the society in reinforcing their power and privileges. Due to these inequalities in the society, there is need for drastic changes in efforts to eradicate these inequalities.

The proponents of the interactionist perspective are basically interested in creation of symbols and meaning. They recognize species as a social construct and try to interpret what is animal and what is human. Many of the societies view animals as mere objects with the media linking other animals with their willingness to participate in their exploitation. Through this perspective, the language is scrutinized in its power to reinforce inequality and oppression. They call for the need to see nonhuman animals as objects that deserve special treatment in the existing social environment as they ascribe positive traits to their human owners in the social mirror.
