PART 1: Introduction and Definitions

Forgiveness from a theological perspective refers to pardoning an offender and letting go of any resentment or claims of compensation for the loss or hurt we suffered. Forgiving helps one to increase happiness, keep calm, and improve your health. Additionally, the Bible teaches us that since love does not keep account of the wrongs, it is based on true forgiveness. As such, it is an important aspect for Christians as it has been emphasized throughout the Bible. Jesus, through His teachings, encouraged forgiveness because even God has forgiven us of our sins as Christians. Even in life, it is essential to forgive others in our lives since it is a way for others to see God’s love coming flowing from you to them. Although it is not always easy to forgive, and sometimes might take a process, it is worth it as it keeps us at peace with others and with God.

PART 2: Biblical Foundation

The Bible talks about two forms of forgiveness; forgiveness of God to us Christians, and personal forgiveness of each other. It is important to recognize that personal forgiveness is based on forgiveness of God. Essentially, when one understands that God has forgiven our sins regardless of the magnitude or circumstance, then you can embrace forgiveness as part of your life. In the Scriptures, we as Christians forgive others because God forgave us (Ephesians 4: 31-32). Moreover, it is a sign of obedience to God who instructs us to forgive others so that He can also forgive us. In Matthew 6:14-15, the Bible says that for if you forgive men for their transgression, your heavenly Father will also forgive you (The Holy bible : King James version, 2011). But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your sins. The aspect of forgiveness is present throughout the Bible, both from God and among Christians as it is fundamental to achieving eternal life after death.

PART 3: Forgiveness in my Personal Life

In my personal life, forgiveness has played a significant role in achieving a peaceful and happy life. Although it has not always been easy, forgiving those who wrong me relieves me the burden of hate or the motivation to harm others. In addition, forgiveness has enabled me to live peacefully and united with my family despite the ups and downs we have encountered. It is easy to feel as if you are weak or you are reducing your capacity to fight for what you believe in when you forgive. But understanding that forgiveness is of great benefit to us, and that it might impact on others as well encourages one to forgive others (Lucken, 2000). On the other hand, it is of the essence to also learn how to forgive yourself for being free from guilt and shame. As a result, we give up anger, and resentment, which helps us to become spiritually fulfilled in the eyes of God.

Conclusion

Forgiveness is one of the empowering attitudes a person can acquire; it has no downside. While it may impact on those we forgive and others around us, forgiveness helps us improve our inner life and empower us in our daily lives. Great people such as Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr embraced and advocated forgiveness in their lives, which enabled them to lead great personal lives and with those around them. Therefore, it is important to realize that we as human beings are not perfect; as such, we will hurt and cause harm to each other. However, understanding that forgiveness is a key to receiving God’s forgiveness of our sins will enable us to forgive each other. As a result, we will experience and lead a peaceful, happy life.
