As a man thinketh by James Allen is a book about the practice of refining oneself without relying on the help of others. It was published in 1903 and according to Allen, the book is not intended as a complete essay on the power of thought but rather, it is intended to help men and women realize that they are the makers of themselves through their own thoughts. The title of the book is also based on the quote from the bible "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he" which is from proverbs 23:7. The book also expounds more on the effect of thought process on an individual. Allen says "what you are today is the accumulation of your thought, your memory and what you have been doing for a long time”. According to this book, human being are the ones who control thinking, understanding and knowledge, they are the shapers of demeanor, makers and molders of conditions, what surrounds them and their fate. Allen correlates the human thinking with backyard and the man with the one who takes care of the backyard just like how the keeper do away with the unwanted vegetation from the garden. Therefore, people should dispatch all the unrefined and feckless thoughts from their minds and focus on cultivating appropriate and authentic thoughts through right choice and true application of thoughts and by doing so man sprouts towards perfection. The book is also divided into sub sections which includes: how one thinks about character, how thoughts affects circumstance, the impact of thought on ones state of being, change of circumstance and actions, change of actions and thoughts.
In conclusion, As a man thinketh unveils the indispensable facts of human nature and a man is indisputably what he thinks and also states that thoughts leads to actions that lead to circumstances and if one wants to change their circumstance they need to change their actions, change in actions is equal to change in thoughts.
