The autism spectrum is a developmental disorder whose symptoms commonly appear at the age of two. As a result, it is referred to as a developmental disorder, although it can be identified at any age. There is the severity of symptoms experienced by autism patients and have a variation in types, thus being referred to as a spectrum. Although language and communication developmental skills and social interactions are the central impairment, autism patients have other symptoms (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018). For instance, individuals who have autism have repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. Besides, their ability to function appropriately in different fields such as work and school is limited since they have difficulties with motor skills and capabilities. Consequently, health practitioners recommend that children should go for autism screening for early treatment where necessary.

The role of physical therapy

Physical therapy is essential for autism patients since it helps them take part in daily routines. For instance, physical therapy enables the victims to gain new motor skills, have a more stable posture, improve their coordination, and increase their stamina and fitness (Ries, 2018). Additionally, their motor imitation skills, such as repeating what they see other people doing, can be improved through physical therapy. Also, reciprocal-play skills, catching and throwing objects, for example, can be enhanced through this type of treatment (Ries, 2018). Therefore, physical therapy enables autism patients to improve their social interactions, thus increasing their ability to participate in different activities.

One specific physical therapy treatment intervention

Basic motor skills are common challenges with young children who have autism. For instance, running, sitting, standing, and rolling might be difficult for them. Arguably, such occurs due to poor coordination and less muscle strength. Subsequently, there are specific interventions that physical therapists conduct to ensure that such problems are treated early enough. For example, sophisticated skills are some of the majorly used activities in curing motor skills problem. The events include throwing and catching, kicking, and skipping (Rudy, 2018). Besides, apart from physical development, the activities also improve the social engagement skills of the victim. However, it is essential to look for a qualified and experienced physical therapist for a successful treatment.
