Back to the Future of Nursing: A Look Ahead Based on a Landmark IOM Report
According to this video the IOM report was interested in improving service delivery in the nursing field and they looked into some key things that nurses should do to ensure quality health care that will help enhance patient safety. To help achieve these the committee involved indicated that there are four practices that are needed in the nursing field and they included: nurses should use the full education and training they achieve in school and apply the same in their nursing practice. The education system that is used for nurses should be improved. Nurses should work together with the health care practitioners and the physicians to help redesign the nursing practice requirements and processes applied while handling patients from the time of admission to the time they are discharged and lastly in order to develop proper workforce policies there should be sufficient information collected from the nurses and other stakeholders involved in the healthcare and nursing field; data collected should not be biased and it should be from different areas and groups of people.
To help achieve the changes that are required in the nursing field, the government has to get involved together with other bodies and work as a team and remove the practicing barriers. Scores for practice should be noted as one of the restricting aspects that prevent persons of low income from getting quality healthcare. Nurses should be able to serve the whole population and these calls increasing the number of nurses in different education levels and the number of programs; the growth of programs will increases the number of nurses and help deal with the challenge of shortage that has made it impossible for nurses to serve the large population and deliver quality services. In conclusion the reports indicated the need for the application of the suggested changes to help improve service delivery and provide safe and affordable healthcare.
