Although nurses work in the same job group and the environment as other professionals in the same industry, their work requires more dedication and commitment and these go to say they have to go the extra mile to be of help to their patients. These protocols are meant for approval and filing by the Florida Board of nursing, which then processes their permission to practice. APRNs are limited against the authority to sign essential documents despite their critical role in the healthcare ecosystem and their close interaction with all the issues that affect practitioners in the industry (Diaz, 2019). The law in the state of Florida prohibits nurses from signing documents terminating or initiating death certificates, Do Not Restrict (DNR) order and Baker Act. A DNR is a letter written banning the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in case the patient stops breathing or if their heart stops beating (Diaz, 2019). On the other hand, the Baker Act is a kind of legislation began in the state of Florida, allowing patients to be subjected to involuntary examination. Such documents are only signed by a physician in spite of the relatively high level of training and expertise among nurses. Such barriers created backlogs for work in the health sector and consumed time.
Whereas the original creators of the Affordable Care Act intended that it be national and mandatory, the Supreme Court ruling of 2012 essentially rendered it optional for states in the US and one of the countries that were ready to take advantage of this provision was the state of Florida (Garfield, Orgera, & Anthony, 2019). The expansion of the ACA Medicaid program was intended to capture the high rates of uninsured adults. Some of these include the nurse practitioners who are low-income earners the Act wants to cover. Sabotaging of the ACA is a significant barrier nurse in the state of Florida, especially with regards to the idea that they work in healthcare and cannot afford to cater to their medical needs.
Overall, nursing is an arduous task profession that requires commitment and determination to adequately cater to the needs of the various patients in healthcare institutions. Some of the common challenges in the nursing profession include state practice and licensure, issues related to the physicians, payer policies, and others. However, in spite the roles nurses play, they are restricted due to various barriers present in the profession and within their work environment and this makes it hard for them to perform and thrive at their workplace.
