According to the Benedictine Rule, sometimes one should observe silence by refraining from saying even the good thoughts that one has had. The rule is especially applicable during this era where everything with regards to communication is publishable for readership. The speech also directs that one should be aware of the power of words since they can either build or tear something down. Therefore, it is crucial to practice silence even if the words are truthful since truthful words can also be destructive when uttered in the absence of love and charity. The speech further directs that although laughter is viewed as part of normal life it can also be used to build up or destroy and if used as an element of destruction it becomes even worse because something joyful has been turned destructive.

The logic of the Directions and the Proper Attitude towards the “Prior”

The logic of the direction is that not communicating our thoughts may not only show the desire and strength we possess when one wants to express themselves but also the passion and power one possesses when one wants to refrain from communication. Not communicating our thoughts even good thoughts will also facilitate one to live a humble and peaceful life free from evil words and penalties.

Source of Authority for the Arguments in these Directions

The source of authority is from the founder of faith who in this case is the prophet. The prophet gives a series of religious principles and rules in the form of sacred texts that should be followed and adhered to spread the gospel of love and to refrain from sin. Accordingly, the saying of the prophet directs that we are at times to abstain, for silence sake, even from the excellent talk, how much more one oughts to refrain from evil words, on account of the penalty of sin.
