One of the potential benefits of using big data in the healthcare is that it leads to an advanced care foe the patients. The use of electronic health records is significant in the collection of the medical data of the patients and putting them into a single source for ease of analysis ( Wang, Kung, & Byrd, 2018 ). This is useful for the healthcare practitioners in the provision of the quality care. Also, the big data can help in the improvement of the operational efficiency. It can be used to reduce the healthcare costs, reduced medication errors and improved financial management. The outcome is a more effective healthcare system where costs are reduce and quality is enhanced.

One of the major challenges or risks of the big data analytic is the security. The security of the big data cannot be guaranteed due to high cases of data breaches, ransomeware and hacking. Due the security risks, some private medical data belonging to the patients may end up getting to the hands of the unauthorized persons leading to privacy breach ( Raghupathi & Raghupathi , 2014). The data quality issues is also another issue affecting the big data analytic. The systematic data inaccuracies and data fragmentation may affect the validity of the data thus affecting the overall health delivery and outcome.

The security risk of the big data can be reduced by implementation of the  updated antivirus software, having a firewall, encrypting the data and employing multi-factor authentication. Such security features can help prevent the protected data from being hacked by the unauthorized users. At the same time, HIPAA provides the security features such as security during transmission, authentication and regulation over the access, integrity and auditing play a key role in protecting the big data from being accessed by unauthorized persons (Hardy & Maurushat, 2017).
