Business and clinical intelligence entails a procedure that applies the use of analyzed data from patient medical records to improve decision making, and ultimately improve medical care provision (Wang et al., 2018). The ever advancing medical sector and now relatively complex healthcare environment has led to the demand for an improved healthcare operating system. Business and clinical intelligence is that system which enhances the healthcare operations by accumulating and synthesizing clinical data that is easily accessed and used by healthcare professionals to make patient care decisions in an efficient and timely manner. Improved patient care in the healthcare sector implies merits such as improved patient outcomes, renewed trust in the institution’s healthcare provision capabilities, and more revenue, just to name a few.

Aside from the merits, there are various factors that influence the application of business and clinical intelligence within the health care setting. These influences are based on the needs and requirements of the advancing healthcare sector as compiled within the paper.

Need for Organization

A well-established medical institution experiences a vast influx of clinical and financial information, which is essential for treatment and later on payment regulation of the patients within the medical institution (Singh, 2015). The business and clinical intelligence system creates a structure that consolidates all this information and organizes it in an accessible and usable manner. By organizing this information in a streamlined package, every user with authorized access can easily navigate through this information, thus creating a solution to the variant issues that arise from the information technology division of the healthcare provision.

Budget Regulation

The cost of health care and health care products has significantly increased. Prescription medication for oncology patients, for instance, is quite costly not only to the patients but also to the medical institution, which has to outsource for medical equipment and pharmaceutical products to facilitate treatment. However, with access to data on the purchase and utilization of these healthcare provision supplies enables the assessment of expenditure on the same. Given that this data is efficiently provided within the business and clinical intelligence system, one can analyze and apply this information to create informed policies that regulate the budget used by the hospital in medical supplies. These records stored and delivered via the business and clinical intelligence system enable healthcare professionals to make budgetary regulations based on intervention effectiveness

Hospital Performance

Patient outcomes and patient satisfaction substantially determine hospital performance. There are authoritative bodies that assess these factors of health care provision. These bodies, while conducting the assessment, look at factors such as medication management and cost-effective medical care. Business and clinical intelligence tools are quite utile in the tracking and provision of the relevant medical information in this respect to enable the monitoring of patient progress based on the medical interventions taken. This helps to improve the patient care programs through the strategic deployment of facilities and resources for the optimal improvement of patient outcomes and general patient satisfaction.

Supervisory Obligation

Medical care institutions have not only clinical but also fiscal obligations which need to be monitored to ensure the efficient operation in service provision of the institution (Mills, 2014). Business and clinical intelligence tools help focus on the medical procedures their outcomes and how they can be improved to serve their patients best. These tools also monitor and record the financial operations of the medical institution. This includes medical equipment and medicine purchases as well as payment of medical care services rendered. Given the vast obligations of a hospital as a medical institution, relevant bodies within the institution need to monitor the progress of these different structures within its configuration. A business and clinical intelligence system provides the tools to supervise these different structures efficiently.
