Ethical conduct implies a standard of behavior that is acceptable and moral in a particular setting. Every workplace has a set of ethics that the people there are supposed to follow. It is important for organizations to understand causes of unethical behavior as well as what to do to get people to behave ethically.

Why People Behave Unethically

A supervisor at my workplace had a habit of repeatedly using abusive language towards his juniors in full knowledge that doing so was against the company policy and was unethical. Such ethical breaches often happen at the workplace and it is important to develop an understanding of why they may occur. First, the environment may cause employees to behave unethically. For example, if the employer condones bad behavior and does not punish errant employees, it is likely that they will continue breaching the rules. Secondly, pressure at the workplace such as to rise up the job ladder or to meet certain deadlines and targets is also a cause of unethical behavior at the workplace (Johnson, 2015).

Preventing Unethical Conduct

Ultimately, every organization would like to have all its employees behaving ethically and to have the ability to prevent case of unethical conduct (Johnson, 2015). Several measures exist towards that end. First, it is important for the entity to develop a clear code of conduct that the employees are supposed to follow. It should outline the kind of behavior expected of each employee and the consequences for noncompliance. Apart from that, it is important for the leadership of an organization to lead by example in behaving ethically (Johnson, 2015). It would not make sense for the management to expect the employees to show ethics while the top people do something different.
