Television co-production refers to the joint effort between two or more production companies with the intention of making a movie or TV series (Brandsen, & Honingh, 2018). This concept has become popular in Canada and internationally because it bears many benefits to the film industry. The co-production treaties have advanced and contributed to the growth of the film industry and the economy of the country.

Co-production is cost-effective as it involves pooling together finances and resources from the production companies involved. It becomes much cheaper and effective as the companies use way less than if they solely produce the film. It also helps in enhancing the creativity in making the film as it also involves sharing of ideas between the involved entities.

Another advantage is that it gives the companies access to the other's market. This means that both companies assist each other in their marketing operations by introducing the film to their customers and to their partner production company. This strategy enables the companies to up their sales, obtain new clients, and to improve their popularity and influence in the country.

Co-production also gives the production companies exposure in the international market. This was the main reason the said film gained worldwide popularity. This exposure was essential in advertising the involved production companies and when producing subsequent films. Co-production has also helped filmmakers to integrate and learn from each other, especially if the partnership is international. It has boosted the quality of films produced (Elwyn, 2020).

What makes Alias Grace a prestige series?

A prestige series is a high-importance, high quality, and high profile production series. It is different from normal television series through the ambition and importance depicted. Alias Grace is considered to be a prestige series seeing that it has gained global popularity, especially because it was aired on Netflix. It is also considered to be high profile because it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is also a mysterious film with a combination of ideas because it contains a couple of complicated and layered intentions. The film has also incorporated the complexity of behavior in their character to add more interest and flavor to the film.

The quality of production is also impeccable in its imagery and visuals. It has visually complex imagery and enriched visual style. The film is also quite refined with the incorporation of historical factors in the film, alongside more esteemed art forms such as film literature and visual arts, which provided more depth, insight, relevance, and artistry to the film.

What are the critiques and disadvantages of co-production globally, as explained in Walking the Tightrope: The Global Cultural Economy of Canadian Television Drama?

Co-production is said to be disadvantageous, especially internationally, as it is viewed as trading culture away (Tinic, 2018). This might cause disagreement if the parties try to force their ideas onto their partners. If the film production does not have a clear agreement of the procedures, it could end up in a war. However, this could be turned around to become cultural exchange whereby the film-making production picks on the positive aspects of all the cultures involved. Another disadvantage of co-production is the hassle of translating the film in order to fit the target audience and the international negotiations of film licensing.

What is Europudding?

Europpuding refers to the integration of characters from different European nations into a film (Hansen et al., 2018). This is made possible through co-production, whereby film companies from different nations are involved. Europudding has been witnessed in the film Katts and dogs, which was produced by film companies from France, the United States, and Canada.
