There are several types of leadership styles that are employed by management or people in authoritative positions. Of interest in this paper is charismatic and transformational leadership styles. Both of them have been equaled and discussions sparked over whether there is a difference between the two leadership styles. In this paper, an analysis will be made of two types of leadership styles, giving comparisons and contrasts of both.
Charism is defined as a compelling attractiveness or charm in an individual which lead them to influence others into performing a given action. Charismatic leaders through that definition are individuals who rely on their charm and persuasiveness to influence their followers. These leaders are often skilled communicators and are verbally eloquent. They are able to interact with their followers on a deep and emotional level, hence the leadership style is mostly focused on the person’s personality and their ability to invoke such responses (Spahr, 2016).

Transformational leaders are people who are able to invoke change invoke change on both the individuals and the systems or structures in place. A transformational leader is a person who is able to motivate his followers and mold them into leaders themselves, aiding them to succeed. They pay attention to the well-being of individuals and communicate with them in order to understand their personal issues. The engagement of the leader fosters the individuals to engage in the organization’s activities to improve and promote success within the organization (Keth, 2016).
Between the two leadership styles, differences have been evoked where Charismatic leaders have been seen to motivate people to respond in a certain manner, whereas transformational leaders invoke a change within the individuals themselves. Charismatic leadership is said to be an innate ability that one is born with, whereas transformational leadership can be adapted through training, in this manner, charismatic leaders are people who are not easily replaceable, whereas transformational leaders can be replaced (Keth, 2016). Additionally, a charismatic leadership may not want a change within the organization, however, a transformational leader is one who aids in transforming the operations within the organization. Lastly, charismatic leaders are people who work towards their own personal benefits, whereas transformational leaders work for the betterment of the organization and their followers (Keth, 2016).
There is a constant requirement for the development of Transformational leaders within an institution as they are able to operate the organization with the end goal being a success.
