Green chemistry has emerged from various ideas and research efforts. For instance, the attempts dealing with resource depletion, pollution, and waste management among many other efforts. Being a branch of chemical engineering, it focuses on the designing of processes, as well as products which are less hazardous to the environment. The field majorly uses technological approaches to ensure a sustainable future. Various principles were introduced as a guiding framework in the conception of better chemical processes and products. The basis of this paper lies on two of the principles; waste prevention and energy.
An increase in energy consumption, as well as depletion of petroleum feed stocks are currently pushing the world to develop new energy-efficient processes renewable sources. The major sustainable source of energy is solar energy. It is one alternative to petroleum. Chemists have dedicated considerable efforts and time to design scientific ways of converting solar radiations to voltaic energy. It has been extended towards the production of organic solar cells which have a comparatively higher efficiency. Waste can be generated in many forms. Its nature, toxicity, and the amount can affect the environment in various ways. In 1992, Sheldon Roger came up with a concept used to quantify waste generated per kilogram of a product. It is widely known as the E-factor, and it is used to assess whether a process is environmentally friendly.

Perhaps, plastic has been a tragedy of commons in our family. Clear plastic containers deceive the eye. They seem to have solved many of our storage problems. However, the discovery, production, and rampant use of plastics are just a tragedy. There is no current consensus as to the detriment of plastics. Studies have shown its harm but people still need more information to turn the plastic tide. They are made of polymers which are inert; phthalates are added to increase malleability. More and more studies, as far as chemistry is concerned, have shown their carcinogenic nature.
In conclusion, the study of chemistry has contributed to better the quality of my life in numerous ways. I’ve acquired knowledge about the nature of chemicals, and chemical processes in various biological and physical phenomena. Everything is chemistry for better or worse. The study of chemistry prepares me to be able to oversee the teachings within the chemistry department, to analyze test scores and use them to highlight areas that need improvement. I’ll be in a position to assist my colleges, who are not specialists in the field of chemistry.
