Child poverty is considered a social problem since it is a condition that has negative effects on a large group of people. According to Demsas (2021), one in seven children in the US is affected by the social problem.

Child poverty originated in the early 1900s due to rapid urbanization and immigration. The typical family size became bigger, and, as a result, the children's needs for food and clothing increased considerably. In this sense, the social problem has been around for a while.

Social problems related to child poverty include social stratification, illegal drugs, and crime. Through social stratification, people with low incomes are categorized as poor. Such individuals are likely to engage in criminal activities, for instance, selling illegal drugs or engaging in theft to earn a living.

Child poverty affects children, individuals aged between 2 years and 18 years.

There are no specific individuals who benefit from the social problem. According to the functionalist theory, children are part of a social institution indispensable for society's long-run survival. When children die due to poverty, other social institutions will be affected in the long run since children grow up to form the institutions. In this sense, no one benefits from it.

Child poverty hurts children the most. It can impact children of all races, but those of the minority groups are likely to be the most affected. In the long run, other social institutions such as families, government institutions, and communities are likely to be affected, given that children grow up to form part of such institutions.

Child poverty affects me psychologically, given that there is disturbing evidence showing how young children are suffering from lacking food.

Local authorities can implement child welfare programs aimed at providing food, shelter, and clothing to families with children in need.
