Herniated disc occurs when the outer part of a disc raptures or tears as the jelly fluid squeezes out. When the disc compresses a neighboring nerve the nerve is pinched. This causes pain or weakness in the limbs. The jelly like core can also inflame causing additional pain. There are several ways that can be used to treat or reduce the pain in the in vertebral disc.
Occupational therapy: People are made to understand on how to do their job so that it follows the normal body biomechanics to avoid hurting ones back. Occupational therapy practitioners should have a deep understanding of ergonomics so as to offer services in a varied living setting, to understand the dynamism between each individual with their environment as they advise on the modifications that would boost an individual’s ability to perform in a given environment.

Back school programme: it is a brief therapy that majors on health education to empower individuals through assessment, education and development of skills. The interventions used here to improve the quality of life include physical training, activity therapy and exercises. The programme has recorded success in reducing back pain, saves time to work and improves patient’s functioning (Jaromi, etal,2018).
Conservative therapy. For general patients, it is advisable to commence with conservative care as opposed to spine surgery for herniated disc. Conservative care is done for four to six weeks to suppress pain and discomfort. To find the right kind of treatment, medics opt for trial and error methods. Treatments meant for pain reduction for example, may help patients to endure manipulation or physical therapy. Physical therapy endeavors to enlighten patients on techniques to prevent excessive wear and tear on the discs ( Giurazza.,et al,2017).
The most common invasive procedures are the epidural injections used for the treatment of disc herniation and radiculitis. They are however not effective according to studies due to lack of specific regulations in both use and study design. It is dangerous to opt for an invasive procedure without advanced technology to guide the effectiveness of the procedure. Fluoroscopic technique is preferred since it increases the chances of targeting the correct location without endangering any other part of the spine unaffected by herniation.non invasive procedures do not involve removal of tissues or incision into the body. Chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and heat therapy are some of its examples.
