Clinical expertise encompasses the necessary skills and work experience of nurses, among other medical practitioners in clinical practice and their experiences in their healthcare fields of specialty. Qualified nurses are equipped with relevant knowledge and skills required in medical practice, although they develop clinical expertise in the course of medical practice as suggested by Saunders and Vehviläinen-Julkunen (2016). Individual practitioner’s clinical expertise has a direct impact on the main components of clinical based decision-making model. This term paper seeks to describe the elements of a clinical based decision-making model, which are impacted by health care practitioners’ clinical expertise. Moreover, subsequent sections of the paper will elaborate on how clinical expertise informs evidence-based clinical practice within healthcare institutions.

The major components of clinical based decision-making model within healthcare systems include clinical circumstances and state of patients, evidence from research studies, patients’ actions and preferences, and clinical expertise as suggested by Saunders and Vehviläinen-Julkunen (2016). A patient’s clinical setting, also known as patient’s clinical circumstances and state, which they find themselves in before consulting medical practitioners, influence diagnostic decision as well as therapeutic decision within healthcare institutions. Expert nurses and doctors can apply a hybrid of theoretical and practical knowledge (clinical expertise) to make informed clinical judgments based on patient’s clinical setting. Therefore, the clinical expertise of individual healthcare providers has a direct impact on the patient’s clinical states and circumstances since healthcare providers can make accurate diagnostic decisions in different situations.

The second component of a clinical based decision-making model, research evidence, is also impacted by clinical expertise based on the fact that expert healthcare practitioners and doctors often integrate research findings with their education and broad knowledge base in making the best clinical based decisions even under challenging circumstances (Saunders and Vehviläinen-Julkunen, 2016). Clinical expertise also influences patients’ actions and preferences, which are vital in the clinical based decision-making model. Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) apply their clinical knowledge and experience to align treatment options to meant the patients’ preferences in a bid to promote better patient outcomes.

Evidence-based practice, EBP, is a collective term that describes the formulation and implementation of the best clinical practices in healthcare based on research findings. EBP aims at promoting patients’ outcomes and improving the quality of healthcare services rendered to patients in care (Greenes et al., 2018). Since Evidence-based practices are derived from research findings, healthcare providers can apply the knowledge they acquired during training and their experience to validate new knowledge obtained from clinical research. Clinical expertise can also be used to assess and evaluate the feasibility of evidence-based practices in secondary disease prevention and health promotion, as suggested by Greenes et al. (2018). It is quite evident that expert nurses among other healthcare providers consult background education knowledge before implementing evidence-based clinical practices to ensure they adopt effective clinical practices only.

Health care practitioners are equipped with a broad scope of theoretical and practical knowledge, which they can use to design clinical research experiments to ensure measurable results are obtained. The results obtained from clinical research experiments are used to formulate effective strategies meant to promote patient outcomes within health care systems. Therefore, an integration of medical experts’ clinical expertise and research findings are used to inform evidence-based practices. Moreover, medical service providers can apply their clinical expertise in making clinical judgments, which guide the implementation of the best clinical practices to hospitalized patients and outpatients seeking healthcare services. In conclusion, clinical expertise is quite crucial in informing evidence-based practice within healthcare systems.
