The Cold War represents a period of struggle between the superpowers that took place after the Second World War. After the surrender of the Nazis in Germany, the alliance that had been effected during the wartime leading to the union of the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union was threatened mainly because they feared and distrusted one another. The end of the Second World War destroyed enemies and rivals of the United States of America and the Soviet Union after their allegiance hence the need to determine the one superpower. This paper examines the post-WWII era to determine how different economic, scientific and cultural factors contributed to the beginning of the Cold War. This analysis will help to determine the role and purpose of the United States in the Cold War, and provide a clear answer to whether the United States caused the Cold War. The paper is founded on the long telegram that sought to examine and bring an understanding to the motive and ideologies of Russia and the Soviet Union.it is also based on the Truman doctrine which was an appeal to the Congress to come to the aid of Greece and turkey in a bid to contain the soviet union influence on the free will of nations.

The nature of the Second World War that led to the union of the Soviet Union with the United States form the basis of cause and effect as it caused the two superpowers to defeat their enemies and the effect was distrust of each other. The long telegram reveals the motive and ideologies of Russia and the Soviet Union as a need to protect power from American influence and to oversee the spread and influence of communism. This was interpreted as a desire for global conquest by the Americans which led to the Truman doctrine which used aggression effort to control the Soviet Union with threats of an atomic bomb.

The change from a period of war with two superpowers on the same side and the continuity of that unity beyond the war led to a period of uneasiness which had to be broken with a determination of on supreme superpower, this contributed to the Cold War as both saw the need to exercise their control over other territories to ground their power. The presentation of the Truman doctrine and its implementation was a turning point that marked the end of the alliance and the begging of a rivalry and struggle between the two superpowers. The thoughts of Stalin as an old era leader contributed to the Cold War as his interest in the expansion of communism ideology presented him as a dictator with the aim of dominating the world for his personal gain. Stalin wanted more than anything to protect his power and evil ideologies. The use of the past in the present is seen in the Truman doctrine where he claims that appeasement and peacemaking strategies had not worked in the world war with the Nazis and as such he sought to make a firm move against Stalin in the Soviet Union.

The above discussion leads us to a conclusion that the Truman doctrine reveals a genuine need to intercede on behalf of nations that lack power and resources to conquer powerful oppressor whose aim is to force their ideologies on others limiting their freedom. The interference leaders were retaliation to Soviet Union attempt a global control. Thus the United States did not start the Cold War but responded to an existing and imminent struggle to maintain freedom and free will and at the same time pursue American economic interests in the world.
