Communication is a critical tool that ensures information is sent and received among individuals or an organization such as a business entity (Barker & Gower, 2010). It is therefore essential to address any barrier that may likely to prevent communication from taking place, be it between two people or many people such as in a company. Any form of communication can develop complications leading to interference in the conveying of messages. For example, when a company manager or a leader speak in a language that people do not understand, a lot of misinterpretation is likely to occur which can hinder effective communication. Factors such as noise which can take many forms can impede effective communication. When people involved in conversation develop some mental attitude towards each other, it can prevent communication from taking place. For example, lack of respect among the persons involved may likely be a barrier to communication.

Physical barriers can also negatively affect communication. A physical barrier can be the prevailing environmental conditions. For example, the room may be too cold or hot. The distance between the communicating parties may work against effective communication (Barker & Gower, 2010). Another hindrance to effective communication occurs if the listening skills are poor. When the receiver does not pay attention, communication is negatively affected. Application of non-verbal or body language techniques in delivering messages can be a major determinant in the success or failure of communication. The non-verbal cues such as facial expression and gestures when expressed inappropriately may hinder communication.

Any use of non-verbal cues or body languages has to be appropriate for the message to be well received.
