TeamSTEPPS is a program used in nursing to improve patient and nurse safety and well-being by promoting effective communication. According to Cooke (2016), teamSTEPPS comprises four concepts that focus on three developmental areas of nursing. These four concepts are leadership, communication, mutual support, and situation monitoring. Haynes & Strickler (2014) explain that these four concepts help develop professional nurses' performance, knowledge, and attitudes. As an advanced practice nurse, the teamSTEPPS program will be very influential in developing my communication skills. This is because the program teaches the importance of effective communication and provides me with the tools to achieve effective communication skills. I also think that the program will help me avoid many errors in my practice that would have otherwise been encountered due to poor communication. TeamSTEPPS will be important in my career because it will enable me to understand team structure and how information should flow when I care for patients.
The tool that I found the most effective for communication and enhancing teamwork and collaboration in practice is the SBAR communication tool. According to Bonds (2018), SBAR structures communication in four components. Bonds (2018) explains the situation where the staff clearly and briefly explains the situation. In the background, relevant and clear information regarding the patient is given, such as their diagnosis. In assessment, the staff or nurse gives their professional conclusion of the situation. Lastly, recommendations are what is required from the person to who the information is being given. I think that this tool is very effective in teamwork and collaboration because it is precise. I think it is the most effective tool for communication because it enables nurses to send a complete message that enables both doctors and nurses to cater to many patients effectively and safely.
