Summary of Teaching Plan
The community teaching plan is based on primary prevention and health promotion. The teaching will aim at teaching the community on the importance of washing their hands. Due to the rising cases of infections in the community, studies have shown that most of the infections arise to unhygienic situations which involve people handling foods without washing their hands leading to contamination and consequently to infections. The teaching will take an estimated time of forty-five minutes, and it will take place at the Gonzales community hall. The most targeted population through this teaching experience is the agriculture workers because they are the ones involved in handling agricultural food products. However, other members of the community will also be accommodated so that the whole society can learn the importance of hand washing and keeping high standards of hygiene.
The teaching will be based on the main topic of primary prevention/health promotion under the theme of hand washing. The lesson will be delivered by Mireya Villanueva who is a specialist and a professional in the health-related issues. Due to the expectations that a large number of people will turn up for the lesson, a large overhead screen will be used to deliver the lesson. This is expected to increase the efficiency of the teaching while at the same time facilitating the ability of the community members to grasp every point of the lesson. The teaching plan aims to ensure that the community members maintain highest levels of hygiene in an attempt to prevent certain infections such as cholera which is caused by consumption of food that has been contaminated with germs. Epidemiological Rationale for the Topic
Reports by the World Health Organization have shown that most deaths that result from infections caused by pathogens are due to poor hygiene. Hand hygiene is therefore vital in reducing the burden of healthcare associated with diseases. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of infections. According to the reports by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that over one hundred thousand deaths occur annually in the United States due to infections caused by germs. The report also indicates that billions of money are spent annually to provide care for the infections caused by germs which could have been avoided had there been proper adherence to hygiene.
Studies by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control have also shown that hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the transmission of antibiotic-resistant organisms. Evidence has also shown that diseases such as cholera and h. Pylori can be reduced by up to more than 50% by thoroughly washing hands regularly. Medical evidence has also shown that cholera is primarily caused by consuming contaminated food or water ( Ellingson et al., 2014). The disease results from poor hygiene and sanitation such as handling of food with dirty hands. This, therefore, shows that regular washing of hands using soap or any other appropriate detergent can help prevent such infections. In most cases, community members do not have knowledge on the risks that could arise from failing to wash hands thus finding themselves into the traps of infection-causing germs.
Studies have also shown that the majority of people who get infections due to germs are unaware of the importance of keeping a high level of hand hygiene. Certain conditions such as diarrhea affect an estimated 2-5 million people globally while at the same time causing over one hundred thousand deaths annually. The most affected population are the children who are not aware of the importance of washing their hands and rely on the guidance of the parents. Promoting awareness through education on the prevention control and the importance of washing hands is, therefore, the critical objective. Community education programs are, therefore, an essential tool to help improve community health and reduce infections caused by failing to wash hands. Survey has shown that promoting community awareness on specific health promotion related issues can help improve the community health by up to 50%. By establishing this education program, the expectation is that there will be improved health outcome by up to 50%. While many people wash their hands, studies have shown that some significant number of people are do not know the appropriate way to wash their hands. The lesson will, therefore, demonstrate the right way of cleaning the hand. From the education and community-based programs, the objective of this program is appropriate and competent for the community health promotion and disease prevention programs. The teaching will demonstrate various proper ways to wash hands using images, pictures, and videos. Native language will also be used to ensure that everyone understands the teachings.
Evaluation of Teaching Experience
The first evaluation of the teaching experience will be based on the outcome. Here, the assessment will be on whether the instruments used in teaching were effective in delivering the right information required. The kind of video used needs to be of good visual impression and display good visual learning for the audience. The video must be appealing to the audience and make them develop more interest in learning on the topic. Other evaluation methods should be based on whether the audience has understood the lesson. This is done by asking a few people in the lesson to demonstrate the right way to wash their hands. This will provide an understanding of whether the lesson has been effective to the audience. Similarly, the audience could be given a chance to teach others what they have learned in the meeting to show whether they grasped all the points. Teaching others will also help the knowledge reach a wide number of people thus promoting community health promotion. An open dialogue and through communication with the audience should also be essential in helping the members understand the lesson better.
The overall effectiveness of the teaching plan will be done in the second class where the audience can be asked to demonstrate what was taught in the previous class. This involves asking them to demonstrate how to wash their hands. However, evaluation of the process can be done through a survey at the end of the lesson. This survey allows for the grading of materials as well as their effectiveness in delivering the content of the lesson. It is expected that specific barriers will arise during the teaching. These include language barriers. Some members of the audience understand different language while others are not native English speakers. However, this can be overcome by delivering some content in the native language that every person will understand.
Community Response to Teaching
The community response to the teaching is expected to be positive and one that will lead to a positive health outcome. The response to teaching will be based on the way the audience will respond to the lessons learned and how they will be willing to practice what they have learned. If the response is positive, members of the community will adopt the appropriate way of washing their hands, and this will minimize the infections that are caused by the germs. The rate of infection of certain infections such as diarrhea and h. Pylori will be reduced. The expectations are that the community responds positively to the teachings by applying what they have learned into their real-life activities. The areas of focus are the ability of the community members to understand the right way to wash their hands while at the same time comprehends the significance of hand washing before handling meals or any other items associated with food.
Areas of Strengths and Areas of Improvement
The strengths of the teaching plan are based on the availability of a qualified and experienced teacher who understands matters of health and hygiene thus being able to deliver the right information to the audience appropriately. The teacher has excellent communication skills, high creativity, and enthusiasm which are essential in teaching. The availability of the teaching materials such as large overhead screen is also another strength that will facilitate the ability of the audience to grab what is taught effectively. However, specific areas need to be improved. These include the ability to explain complicated things in a simple way. Most adults require the use of simple terms and simple way to explain complicated things to them so that they can understand it better.
