Emotional Intelligence: The Ultimate Guide

In the recent past, the need to effectively manage a group of people have become increasingly demanding due to the need of meeting the different individual differences in an attempt to manage a team. From a general perspective, individuals’ emotions are difficult to maintain and require adequate skills and information to effectively manage different people emotions ( Goleman, 2009) . One of the approaches that can be used effectively to manage emotional differences in the workplace in an attempt to bring job satisfaction which in turn influence employees’ productivity is the emotional intelligence approach. Emotional intelligence is the process by which an individual clearly understand their emotions as well as those of other people, ability to differentiate different feelings and appropriately labeling them ( Goleman, 2009) . The process also involves utilizing adequate information to influence one's thinking process and behavior, which in turn helps the individual in changing or adjusting one's feeling to match the surrounding environment or an individual's goals. 

Difference between Intelligence and EI 

The traditional view of the term intelligence significantly varies with the modern view of the term emotional intelligence ( Bradberry & Greaves, 2007) . Firstly, traditionally, the term intelligence was widely used to describe individuals who have the ability to think logically, with adequate knowledge and understanding, as well as individuals with exceptional learning abilities ( Bradberry & Greaves, 2007) . Additionally, the traditional view of intelligence was also based on and with planning skills, creativity as well as adequate problem-solving skills. Importantly traditionally, the term intelligence was used to describe individuals who demonstrated high levels of self-awareness ( Bradberry & Greaves, 2007) . On the other hand, the term emotional intelligence today has been used to refer to an individual's ability to understand their emotions as well as those of other people. Additionally, as opposed to the traditional view of intelligence as individuals’ adequate knowledge and understanding, the term emotional intelligence refers to an individual's ability to use the emotional knowledge to shape one's behavior and the process of thinking to match the environmental demands as well as other emotional needs ( Bradberry & Greaves, 2007)

Learning EI 

After completing the emotional intelligence test online, I believe that emotional intelligence can be acquired through a learning process, though for some individuals it occurs naturally ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Firstly, in an attempt to build one decision-making skills and problem-solving techniques emotional intelligence play a significant role, hence, one can learn to manage and understand their emotions as well as those of others in an attempt to improve the problem solving, decision making as well as confidence skills ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Their previous experiences significantly shape human being behavior and response towards a particular condition. In this case, an individual can learn to manage their emotion through their past experiences with their different emotions as well as the consequences that they faced as a result of displaying particular emotion ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Successful management of emotions is rewarding as opposed to expression of other emotions such as anger, which can lead to negative rewards such as lack of a friend. As a result, individuals tend to repeat emotions and behaviors that are rewarding, hence, successfully acquiring emotional intelligence skills. Additionally, the ability to understand other people's emotions is also associated with reward and punishment ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Whereby individuals who understand other people's emotions and respond emotionally appropriate to the surrounding environment adapt quickly to the environment as well as develop a long-lasting relationship with other people, this is rewarding and encourage the individual to continue behaving in the same way. 

On the other hand, failing to understand and respond to the surrounding environment appropriately regarding emotional well –being leads to loss of friends and challenges adapting to varying environmental circumstances. Which in turn force an individual to learn how to manage their emotions as well as those of others as well as altering their emotions to match the environmental needs ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . From this perspective, emotional intelligence can be learned based on an individual's experiences in expressing different emotions as well as how their capacity to understand their emotions and those of others influenced their behavior and relationship with other people ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Additionally, there is need to improve on my emotional intelligence. This is because it aids in building one's decision-making process and thinking process ( Bar-On et al., 2007) . Also, it enables one to relate well with other individuals, enhances one's problem-solving techniques as well as building on one's self-esteem and confidence which are essential skills in one's day to day life experiences. 

EI Relationship with Leadership and Motivation 

Emotional intelligence plays a significant role in leadership as well as in motivation of employees within an organization. Firstly when focusing on emotional intelligence and leadership, it is essential to indicate that there exist a positive correlation between EI and leadership, whereby individuals with high levels of EI score relatively high in their leadership styles ( Horn, 2012) . The positive correlation arises from the fact that individuals who score high in EI have elevated levels of self-awareness, which in turn enable them to understand their weaknesses and strength hence allowing them to work on their weaknesses, which in turn help them to relate and lead people in the most appropriate way. Additionally, individuals with EI have a clear understanding of other people emotions, which in turn helps them to lead people by their interests and handle individuals differently depending on their moods, hence, effective leadership techniques ( Horn, 2012) . Additionally, due to the high levels of self-awareness among emotional intelligence individuals, the people score relatively high in self-motivated aspects. People who are self-motivated significantly focuses on meeting their goals and objectives, which in turn terms the relationship between motivation and EI as positively correlating. Good leadership and motivation levels are dependent on EI, which in turn influence and motivate individuals to be creative, innovative, appropriate decision-making skills as well as excellent problem-solving skills, which in turn describes good leadership practices ( Horn, 2012)

Working with Emotionally Intelligent Manager 

Working with a manager who has EI is a good and rewarding experience. A manager exhibiting EI is aware of the employee’s emotions and makes decisions that align individual's emotional needs which in turn helps in improving the employee's self-esteem, confidence, and motivation which impact positively on the employee's productivity which results in job satisfaction among employees ( Bradberry& Greaves, 2007) . On the other hand, working with a manager with low EI is challenging, as the manager is not aware of his actions on others. Hence, making decisions that do not take into consideration the general well -being of the employees, which in turn lead to a lack of motivation as well as the lack of job satisfaction. The managers EI played a significant role in shaping how the manager interacted with employees from different cultures as well as how the managers made decisions in the organization ( Horn, 2012) . In a working environment, there are numerous cultures represented by the various employees, therefore, to ensure equality and eliminate cultural conflict, the manager must acknowledge the cultural differences to enhance harmony in the workplace. EI enables the managers to understand these cultural differences and provide appropriate techniques to deal with cultural diversity in the workplace.
