This report entails information about Coshocton Regional Medical Center, Aultman Orrville Hospital and Union Hospital that have been compared using the medicare.gov website. The report seeks to compare the three hospitals on the basis of three main concepts: hospitals' general information, the summary of the patients' experience at the hospital, and the summary of the patients’ hospital effectiveness or quality of care.
Hospitals’ General Information
Both Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Union Hospital are acute care hospitals while Aultman Orrville is a critical access type of hospital and does not provide emergency services. Although all the hospitals use outpatient safe surgery checklist, Aultman Orrville does not use inpatient safe surgery checklist which makes it unable to reduce major postoperative complications after inpatient surgery. Besides, Aultman Orrville seems to have not embraced technology like Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Union hospitals. First, the hospital does not have an electronic system that can enable the transfer of lab results from the laboratory to the doctor's rooms. Also, the Aultman Orrville has no facilities for electronically tracking patients' lab results, tests, and referrals between visits like the other two hospitals. Patients’ Experience at the Hospitals
The three hospitals are compared based on the ten important hospital quality topics. According to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), the three hospitals scored over 80% average at both Ohio State and National level on three important hospital quality topics. These are the topics on nurses' communication to patients, doctors' communication to patients, and that the hospitals gave patients information about what to do during their recovering time at home. However, Coshocton Regional Medical Center scored the least among the three hospitals on the qualities of how well the doctors and nurses communicate with their patients. Since there is a very strong relationship between patients' satisfaction and nurses and doctors' communication, it, therefore, implies that Coshocton Regional Medical Center is poorest on patients' satisfaction based on the nurses and doctors' communication among the three hospitals. The survey of patients’ experience also shows that 66% of the patients who took the survey indicated that Union Hospital helped their patients as soon as they sought for help while 70% and 74% favorited Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Aultman Orrville respectively on how fast they responded to their patients’ help when sought.
On the basis of the hospital staff always explaining about the medicine before giving them to patients, Coshocton Regional Medical Center performed better with 67% score, and Aultman Orrville Hospital is second with 64% while Union Hospital was the last with 63%. This quality topic is vital as many patients would prefer to seek health care services in hospitals that offer good guidelines on how to use the medicines, their side effects and the possible ways of reducing those side effects. A patient who is allergic to some chemicals that may be contained in medicines such as Sulphur would prefer to visit Coshocton Regional Medical Center over Aultman Orrville and Union hospitals. On room and bathroom cleanliness, Aultman Orrville is the best among the three hospitals with 81% of the patients who visited the hospital previously showing satisfaction on the quality topic. Coshocton Regional Medical center and Union Hospital scored 79% and 74% respectively. The three hospitals seem to be experiencing a problem with noise from the surrounding area at night like 54%, 52% and 51% of the patients said that the area around Aultman Orrville, Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Union hospitals respectively, is always quiet at night.
Only Aultman Orrville hospital is above average (53%) in terms of patients understanding their care before they left the hospital, while Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Union hospitals scored 46% and 48% respectively. More patients gave Aultman Orrville hospital got more ratings of 9 or 10 on a scale 0-10 where it scored 74% followed closely by Union hospital with 73% and Coshocton Regional Medical Center with 62%. The hospitals' rating trend is the same with patients who reported "YES" they would recommend the hospital. Aultman Orrville was the most recommended with 71% followed by Union hospital with 69% and finally the Coshocton Regional Medical Center with 55%. Comparing patients’ experience with these three hospitals, Aultman Orrville is the most preferred followed by Union hospital, and Coshocton Regional Medical Center is the last.
Patients’ Hospital Effectiveness/Quality of Care
Looking at the quality of care measures such as complications and death rates will help us compare the value of care between the three hospitals. On the quality of care for heart attack patients, both Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Aultman Orrville hospitals have a too small number of cases while Union hospital's number of cases have no different than the national rate. This implies that the average number of death cases due to a heart attack at Union Hospital is the same as that of all inpatient hospitals nationally. The number of cases of complications for hip/knee replacement patients for both Coshocton Regional Medical Center and the Aultman Orrville hospitals is too small while the Union hospital’s cases have no different than the national rate. However, the death rate for heart failure patients and the death rate for pneumonia patients across the three hospitals are no different than the national rate.
