I believe we can place value based on human decisions in their private life. The higher the risk of death, the lower the monetary value. For instance, the murder of Nicole Simpson cannot be valued the same as that of an addict or a younger healthy person. Although putting a monetary value on life is morally wrong, there are instances where it is the only available option. Such value proves vital in the compensation of families who have suffered fatalities and wrongful death (Partnoy, 2012). The cost of life becomes statistical because there is a risk money trade-off, and compensation provides relief for the plaintiff to remedy the situation. Society should calculate compensatory and punitive damages by regarding the magnitude of the situation and its nature. Compensatory, they can evaluate the extent of emotional turmoil the ordeal has caused, such as mental wellness, expenditure on the same, past physical abuse where amounts can be estimated for compensation. For punitive damages, evaluating the nature of incidences gives a view of whether the acts were accidental, deliberate, informed by negligence or revenge. If, indeed, it was unintentional, then the value will not be the same as a voluntary or vengeance case. No, I do not think the rewards were fair, considering the gruesome murder of Nicole, Goldman, and preponderance of the evidence. Although the court relied on evidence, it could have focused on the probable truth given that O.J had domestic violence cases. Convincing evidence on the situation could have ensured that both victims got a considerable sum of compensation more than they were rewarded. Indeed, Rosenberg (2016) asserts that O.J record of domestic violence proved that the system had produced him and misplaced justice. Perhaps his violence record could have informed an intentional motive and emotional hurt, thus, higher monetary rewards.
