1 . Why do you want to study this topic?

My interest in this topic is based on the impacts of war and natural disasters on safety, culture, and environment. War and natural disasters have a significant impact on safety, culture and the environment. Over the periods, standards and considerations have compiled and placed to help in the continuous improvement of Health, Safety, and Environment. The aim of the environmental considerations in military action is to enable a proactive planning rather than continuous intervention to mitigate the negative impacts of military operations, thereby ensuring the future viability of the host nation (Brady, 1992). They are meant to ensure that the military action does not pose a high negative impact which could make the host nation fail to recover from the military operations.

In summary, this topic develops an awareness of the important written expression and communication that covered a diverse set of industries such as speech and debate, government, education, and critical and creative thinking and research skills (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1994). Our problem-solving program instructions as health, safety, and environmental trainers are aimed at providing candidates with information and skills to enable them to participate in hazard recognition and control activities, i.e. to help identify and solve problems through teamwork, management means, and to exercise the rights to have external agencies investigate the workplace hazards when warranted.

2. What do you already know or presume about this topic?

Through research, I have been able to learn on the environmental impacts on communities affected by war and natural disaster. My departmental research is geared towards knowing and understanding the mission objectives, and ensuring that the initial, current and final site conditions are accurately and correctly assessed and documented. The US military has been known historically for exercising restraint even in general war (32-7061 U.S. Army. For example, during World War II in Europe, the military was ordered to limit the amount of damage to works of art, churches, monuments, archives, and libraries whenever possible, without endangering the troops or the mission (32-7061 U.S. Army).

In my research, I have included military unit procedures manual which describes how to apply statistics feedback received, risk organization methods to classify actions that may be harmful to the environment and the appropriate steps meant to prevent or mitigate damage. Additionally, the research includes the development plans to establish regional disaster facilities and distribution centers. Some of this has been built from my prior knowledge of the issues surrounding this topic.

3. Do you have personal experience with this topic in a way that will create obstacles for you or bias your inquiry? How will studying this topic benefit the field of education?

Yes, I have personal experience on this topic. I have a background in the United States Military in the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) which is consistent with training, research, safety, and site inspection on environmental issues. My departmental research and experiences are based on the following; knowing and understanding the mission objectives and ensuring initial, current, and final site conditions are accurately and correctly assessed and documented. When it comes to operational planning, I tend to be biased because I have been trained to implement certain instructions during operation phases as it relates to military mission and project planning. Commanders, service members and civilians within the various military and defense organizations are ultimately responsible for the land and the associated environment entrusted to their care.

This topic will be of high benefit to the field of education because I train on QHSE procedures for project execution, risk assessment, and specialized technical expertise to conduct an internal inspection on the status of their workplace with regard to health and safety adherence. These tools strengthen ones mutual understanding and serve as a model for QHSE which jointly addresses common interests and identify solutions to problems. Therefore, the field of education will benefit by ensuring that these tools are inculcated into the students to help create and maintain high safety standards and procedures. Also, it provides sufficient knowledge to students who have military career aspirations by giving them adequate background on environmental issues surrounding military operations.

4. Is this topic of sufficient interest to sustain a prolonged focus to complete the Capstone project?

Indeed, the topic is based on military analysis, mission objectives, Statement of Work (SOW) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Additionally, the topic is intended to assist the international military community in identifying procedures to adequately assess the impact of its activities to meet its environmental responsibility to ensure a sustainable environment.

Capstone projects are meant to establish how well a student understands of their choice of topic. Students’ are therefore encouraged to choose a topic they have tangible competence based on either their academic work, professional experience, or an exploration of future careers ("Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree | Capstone Project | UVA SCPS", 2018). Capstone projects help the students to demonstrate their research, analytical and writing skills to either graduate and professional schools or prospective employers ("Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree | Capstone Project | UVA SCPS", 2018). As such, the students are guided by faculty members through a two-semester period ("Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree | Capstone Project | UVA SCPS", 2018). My topic is based on my professional experience in the military, and as such, fits well in meeting and completing the Capstone project.
