Correctional facilities are housing facilities that restrict convicted individuals who have sentences that are longer than one year. The jails are meant to hold an individual in less than one year. The correctional facilities are used to restore inmates and be categorized as minimum, moderate, and maximum-protection facilities. These facilities are segregated according to the prisoner’s categories. The facilities are subjected to National and State laws. The constitution of the United States specifies the minimum living standards for prisoners. The correctional officers have been given the mandate to monitor the inmates in the correctional facilities. Male and female correctional officers are responsible for regulating the behaviors of the inmates in the facilities. Both the male and female correction officers should be allowed to work in both the men correctional facilities.
Male correctional officers may play a greater role in the women correctional facilities. They can act as positive role models to the women offenders and give them an alternative example of how men should behave towards women and treat them. Women offenders often go a lot than men, such as physical and sexual harassment, the trauma that have led to structural and chemical changes in their brains. Men should be equipped with the skills to handle such women offenders. They should be aware that women's abuses can lead to negative responses to them, such as slamming doors. Men should also be allowed in the women correctional facilities to changes the offender’s perception of men (Cowburn, 1998) . Many women offenders have undergone negative experiences, such as hurting relationships, abusive fathers, and husbands. Therefore, male correctional officers may be required to build positive experiences in those inmates. The male correctional officers are responsible for providing the inmates with a positive male to look up to and respect.

Allowing female officers on male correction facilities have greatly in the perception of male inmates towards the female. There has been a close interaction between the female officers and the male inmates. The positive relationship between male inmates and female officers have improved their job competency (Cheeseman & Worley, 2006) . The interactions have developed a positive attitude towards women on male inmates. The male offenders interact with the female officers in various ways, such as approaching the females for relationships. Many of the young male inmates prefer female officers due to the close interactions between them. Rareness and novelty with the inmates create a favorable working environment for the officers. Working in male prisons changes male inmates' perception of the behaviors and attitudes towards sexuality (Cowburn, 1998) . Most of the inmates are not white and are likely to have been brought up by disciplinarian ladies; thus, they respect the female officers. Female officers can reduce aggression and men's violence in areas such as control and radio pickets. It would be necessary for the correctional agencies to offer the female correction officers the necessary training to handle the male inmates' issues.
The correctional facilities have to consider the legal and ethical issues that can arise while staffing the correctional officers in their respective facilities. They should consider correctional officers’ proactiveness. They should consider the staff who can think ahead and solve the inmate’s problems before they get serious. They should select individuals who cannot be easily influenced by inmates. Also, the correctional officers should be responsible people. They should help the inmates in case they face problems, such as diseases. Many of the inmates are cunning and can take advantage of that to escape from the correction facility. The correctional institution should equip the correctional officers with the necessary security equipment, such as a gun. Most inmates in either the male or female correctional facilities are dangerous people. They are potential threats to the officers and can-do harm to them, such as harassing them sexually, beating them, or even killing them. Therefore, necessary equipment should be provided, especially to the women correctional officers who work at male inmates’ facilities.
The correctional institution should provide the staff with training that focuses on making good behavior choices to make them better workers. Some of the correctional officers have been involved in introducing contrabands, drugs and alcohol, security violations, and substandard job performance. Training the staff will result in better choices and ensuring that the facility would run more effectively and safely (Lambert et al., 2007). Also, training would equip the officers on how to handle the opposite gender. The correctional facilities should consider transformational officers who can guide the inmates in the right direction and easily attract them towards positive perceptions about the opposite gender and positive behavior. The correctional officers should select individuals who can perform their duties efficiently in terms of changing inmates' behaviors. They should also consider those individuals who cannot fall easily into personal relationships with inmates. The correctional facilities should ensure that the officers and inmates adhere to the policies, and every individual is subject to disciplinary actions (Lambert et al., 2007). Their purpose should be to create an image of a positive perception of the other gender. It should be about developing positive relationships to remove the negativity in the inmates.
In conclusion, incorporating male and female correctional officers in both male and female correctional facilities has led to a greater impact on the inmates. Men officers create a positive impression on women inmates of how men should show respect and treat women. It has helped women who had undergone men's mistreatments and build a positive attitude towards men. Also, a male inmate creates a positive interaction with female officers that helps them change their perceptions, such as sexuality. The correctional institutions should have some considerations while staffing the correctional officers. They should observe factors such as individual’s proactiveness, responsible, ethical, and the officers' safety. The correctional officers play a great role in monitoring the facilities in the correctional facilities.
