Hello Toby,

After reading your post, I agree that counterinsurgency recognizes the military approach alone cannot be feasible in the fight against terrorism. Counterinsurgency encompasses military, political, and civilian approaches to countering irregular insurgent warfare. According to Seth Jones of the RAND Corporation, defeating an insurgency is a long process that may last for more than 14 years; based on this, U.S. can employ counterinsurgency tactics that will see the country countering terrorism activities in the long run (DHS, 2019).

United States can utilize counterinsurgency tactics when it has the support and legitimacy of the local population. Counterinsurgency is a better tactic than counterterrorism when the government has won the local community's help to promote good governance and keep its troops in the ground to offer security after the government possesses have taken full control of the area ( Hazelton, 2017) . It is also essential for the government troop to destroy militant insurgents' main body to suppress the last insurgent remnants or win over.

Hello Josh,

As mentioned in your post, counterinsurgency core emphasis is to address the basis that is used to recruit people to an insurgency to defeat it from within. Unlike counterinsurgency, counterterrorism strategies focus on preventing the escalation of terrorism attacks, controlling the damages caused by the terrorist attack, and ultimately eradicating terrorism ( Rineheart, 2010) . The united states' government should utilize counterinsurgency tactics to combat insurgency since it will fight terrorism from its route cause and possibly identify its network across the world.

Over the past four decades, counterterrorism evaluation has indicated a slow process that possibly involves adopting the nature of international terrorism and focusing on the advancement of military technology. In the case of AL-QAEDA'S strikes on the Pentagon and the world center in 9/11, the U.S government would have employed counterinsurgency to identify the AL-QAEDA’S terrorism network and how they undertake their recruitments ( Byman 2004)
